To a small extent I agree that academic ability is genetically determined. It is just the ONE gene that cause handicap in learning, and the chances of the particular gene being altered is rare, very very rare.

Grandparents no education
Parents low formal education
Kids at a few years old say don't like to study

not really... with the exception of mentally handicapped people everyone is born with the same neuro structure. how you fair for your exams and stuff is entirely up to the individual.

no lex.. some parents very poor, only study till Primary. working as taxi drivers, but kids are very smart, it's more of attitude than genetic ability

Apart from intellectual capacity, when it comes to choice, I think genes play a part. I sometimes read that twins will make the same choices and end up doing the same things even when they are separated since kids. Something like, our decision making process and personal tendencies, are coming from genes. So to expand on this theory, I believe academic ability is genetically influenced by genes, not only in intellectual capacity but also choices and efforts.

I can agree to some extent that some people are indeed more intelligent.
And I can agree that some people develop later in life than others.
However, I believe that genetics don't play a big part in deciding how smart you are. In the end, it's all about upbringing and personal attitudes.
I've seen too many kids born to highly-educated parents who get lost along the way and end up in jail, reform school, and what not.
And I've seen too many kids born to lowly-educated parents ending up as scholars and highly-successful professionals. -
i'm probably going to hell for this.. but is his grandson a product of his foray into eugenics?

Got xian1 tian1 and hou4 tian1 one what. Some people xian tian clever in their genes already, just that they're complacent or lazy. Some people hou tian very hardworking can get good grades leh?
Or maybe the "hardworking character" is from the parents. -

But it does has to do with your background.... family plays an important part.
80% of a kids mind is determine thru the age 0-13
Children learn their characteristic from their parents... and often these trails will not change thru their life unless some exceptional cases... then the rest of the 20% depends on yourself...
Therefore often a good parents with the right knowledge could teach the kids properly as they have the knowledge... example... business parents have the ability to teach the kids their skill...
Some hua taxi one kids while during young maybe knows the importants of studies for their family as its hard for the parents cultivate the lifelong wish to study hard to earn for the family...
So therefore what are you and your kids will be determines by the parents.... and family background.
The only genetic links is the part of intelligence.... and other capability like memories etc... has alittle to do with your biological structure... But biological can be change thru your life... -

i think it's mostly how the parents bring up the child. Maybe a well off family (in most cases 'smarter' since they would have better qualifications and better job) would have less monetary worries and therefore can put more effort and time into nurturing their kid.

In short, my answer would be "yes, but not exclusively".
The environment in which one is raised plays a role which is no less important, although admittedly, if you put two people of different levels of intelligence level in the same environment(imagine twins or siblings in the same family having an equal access to opportunity) and should they attain different levels of success, that should answer your question.
At the end of the day, exceptional academic ability, in my opinion, is no different from extraordinary musical or athletic ability - quite simply, not everyone is born to be a Stephen Hawking, Michael Jordan or Beethoven even if they were prepared to work hard... -

Gene is part of the whole story -
Never hear before some people are just born smarter or more hardworking.
Some people in school read one time understand fully, but I need read 5times to barely understand.
Some people super mug one, can take 12hr mug a day no sweat but I mug for 8hr can concuss liao.
I feel academic ability is genetically determined one. If you born not so smart like me, there is only so far you can go. Even if you put in tons of hardwork.
Or maybe I juz lazy...
