This really happened to my aunt's friend. On the day before the maid was to go back to Indonesia, she put poison into the dog's food. The dog was seriously ill but managed to survive. However, due to the poison, he now has cancer

Look at the other side of the story. Maybe the maid was ill-treated? Pent-up frustrations. At least it was just the dog, and not the employer.
