I dun agree to the thread's topic. Simply because we have races other then the chinese here. English is our common spoken tougue and we should use it as our first language, to promote unity and common identify.
And whoever said go f*** chinese earlier, if you ARE a chinese, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. I am still fine with those who can fail their own mother tongue, but those who look down on it, please wake up your freaking idea. I guess I have to respect the mentality of the Chinese when they could embrace another language and learn it, (e.g English) because they know and realise the use and importance of it.
And us? We know China is going to boom. But how many youths here are saying the same thing? things like "go f*** chinese? That's pretty sad isnt it?
English is simply a language that uses words and phrases from all other spoken and written language. It is so commonly used simply because of the history of the world, of how western powers captured America/Asia for their expansion. If Japan managed to keep Asia from WWII, I guess we would using nihon-go now huh?
There is a good reason why English is being used thou. But each race should also have a basic command of their mother tongue. Its sad to see that so many, I would say Chinese youths in Singapore, are failing their mother tongue. Yes, it is one of the more difficult language to learn and write, but a pass? -

I just realized .. your national language or 1st language has nothing to do with whether ang mohs understand you or not.
Knowing your national/1st language is not mutually exclusive with knowing English.
So Malaysia's official language is Bahasa Melayu .. but I'm sure those who deal with ang mohs know how to speak English too. -

My ancestors in China did not speak the northern dialect (which is known as "guan hua" or official-speak which by a twist of fate was retained as the national language of China). They spoke Hokkien, as did the ancestors of about a million Singaporeans.
