should i upgrade my laptop?

mom jux bought mi a new laptop last month,acer travelmate 2440,but when i first recieved my com,i tried the programe n the com was so hang n lag,my current ram is 256mb,should i slot in another 1gb to make it 1.25gb,but if i slot in,my 1yr warrenty would be void...is it worth it?
