case 1:
Guy (Diploma going for DL degree, just started some small Biz and Biz never really took off) dating gal (degree from NUS). Gal's dad don't like him as no degree and not making big $$$. so after dating sometime bye bye.
case 2:
Guy (JC drop out) but currenty own a Trading Biz in Singapore/Thailand. Gal (overseas degree), just got married and Gal's parents are ok with guy. -
I believe some of you would have read about my experiences related to this matter in Cafe Casual Redux.
Sigh... I find it sad that education level can still be a barrier to social interactions in this day and age.

Would agree with me that all these prejudices are a result of people from different social classes not having the opportunity to interact with each other? Maybe the older generation that haven't been through NS will have a greater problem with this.

She has O levels,I have an second upper honours degree from NUS,well I am pretty comfortable with this dichotomy.
However,my parents has voiced some reservations about me just hanging out with her.They said it is better to stop doing it coz it would give her the wrong idea.
They have also voiced out many practical reasons for not getting hitched to a partner with a lower edn level. Eg,next time when we buy flat,I would have to bear a much higher burden coz my CPF would be much higher...
My parents said that better to have someone with the same edn level(or least poly diploma) so that financially my family next time won't be so tight...
By the way,my parents are not highly educated either(my father studied till Sec 2 while my mom has O levels) they said they dont want me to suffer like they did when just starting out a family. -

i dun see any big gap in education level in this case anyway. somemore both are tertiary educated.

i think that the parents might look down on him due to his never really took off business.
no matter what it is YOU who will be marry the girl and live with her in the future not your parents so just go for it and for this case, just don't listen to your parents as it is your future happiness at stake. -
Parents aren't directly discriminating against education level. Rather, they are focused on the guy's ability to do well in future.
I know many of you will spout rags to riches story with little education, but those are the exceptions rather than the norm.
There has always been a strong correlation between the well educated and being well-to-do.
If the guy only has O-levels but making millions every year, no parent will make any noise.
However, if you are unqualified and in a nowhere job, dun be surprised that not only the parents will look down on you, but majority of our Singapore population.
I'm sorry, but it is a fact of life. Even myself am guilty. I may try not to look down, but I can't help having some condenscending thoughts, despite good intentions. As Singaporean Chinese, many of us are brought up to view the importance of material wealth. We are victims of our own societal upbringing. Even more so for our gahmen elites.
