Singapore Sportsman getting too much money!?

There is this news paper article submitted by someone that says The sportsman who goes to DOHA win medal get too much money!!!! The person seems to think that giving monetary reward will discourage sportsmenship...
I think the person should wake up his bloody mind!!! These sports man spent 10-20 years of their life since young to train... deprived of much enjoyment and gone through sh-it to train 4-7 days a week... and their career last only about 10-15 years... for the pride of our country... After these ever wonder where they will be working as? How much is $250,000 for a life of such hardship?
Is because of people like that in SG that's why Singapore will never get into world cup and gold in olympics.. he/she just wish the money is spend on his/her social welfare right? -

Honestly, I don't understand why is gahmen pouring so much money into sportsmen and not into 'new, important' social welfare programme.
Sportsmen do good will increase our GDP and income? I think not. -

I think he meant that its just the Asian games, not the Olympics so why the need to pay so much. Its not like sailing has so much commerical value here.
So people in the EPL earn alot, but they do not take it from the taxpayers or the govt. Its a commercial venture. Rather, the govt earns from the tax generated from the EPL which is massive.
In Sg, we are indirectly paying them because they win something. But again, to win a gold in Asiad is sometimes nothing great really. The winner of the Asiad soccer gold medal probably cant even defeat a team like Wigan or Reading.
You may win every single Asiad swimming medal but you will probably lose to a single country called Australia totally.
We should be happy but probably not to the extent of paying so much. Unless of course you are world best or commercially viable, and not out of taxpayers money. -

The main gist of my thought is why bother cultivating sportsmen? How does that help our economy, and the men in the street? And not so much so of the money at hand.
I bet it is some stupid plan that man in the street no job, no money never mind. Got pride in the nation for doing well in international sports events. -

I would think it is sufficient enough to reward and entice the sportsman... and not really enough to compenstate for much of their effort they actually put in in their life... Their life, their choice. Sportspeople main source of income always has to do with sponsoships. If they can't do well, they starve. It is a fact of life for every job. Well you have the MM LKY idealogy... that was in the past... I think these sportsman gave their all... this is just a small token of appreciation... $250k can help alot of poor families... but frankly Singapore government despite giving that much still does has the abilities to help these families... I think these people do us proud why not give it to them what they deserve. Afterall its their blood and sweat money.... When I talk to a PRC bout his country to have quite a bit of a sportsman... he was quite proud about it... when I talke to a brit about soccer he was so proud with his english soccer.... And about Singapore....? Nothing to talk about... S league went down the drain... even humans at times need some ego fruit and spiritual aspect(or phsycholical aspect for athetist sake) to live.. man live on hope... We can be proud of our economy and clean and effective government... our army to protect us in times of war and why not sports?
At least for once I was quite proud that our Singapore team did beat the Malaysian 6 points lead in soccer... but that was years ago.. -
Singapore offer quite the least compared to some countries... coz of Singapore high cost of living... If our sportsman are really getting a lot of money, we will have attracted a lot of talents and enter the World Cup already.
