before Immigration and Customs merged, they said that if you are human, Immigration will clear you.. if you are an animal or an object, Customs cleared you..
the only exception is if you are dead... then your corpse will go through Customs..
now, under ICA, we clear everyone but there is still Singapore Customs which collect Customs Duties (only 4 things are dutiable in Singapore: tobacco, alcohol, motor spirits and cars)
people still want to refer to the people there as "customs"
even in Malaysia, it's Immigration! (unless you are not human then it's Customs)
btw, people do not understand this too.. you as a citizen to a country, gives you a right of entry to your own country... however if you go to another country, as a foreigner, you have no right of entry but a privilege of entry...

5 years is the validity imposed by ICAO and the lifespan of that chip in the passport.. -

if your passport is still less than 10 years old, you can go extend for 1 year
and u need not have 6 months remaining.. 2 months also can..
seriously.. my friend did it before.. but dont let it left till 3 months..
but if u take aeroplane, better 6 months.. go JB 5/4 months OK
left 5, 4 months still ok..
to avoid excessive questioning by the SG side, use the biometric lanes

zz sian, i remember the last time i went kuantan, i checked my passport on the day before we left. Then i see, wtf expire liao, last for ONE year only?
so i paid 70 SGD for a passport lasting 1 year
but then i go tell them liao, compensate me 12 yrs str8 for 50 SGD

Causeway will pass you, tuas one confirm won't pass you. In fact, tuas singapore side will tell you, you can take the risk, but you turn back not my problem.

i see a lot of people with a lot of misinformation
if you are a singapore citizen, even if you have a passport with one day left on it, the singapore authorities will not stop you if you want to go.. you have a right of exit and entry into singapore.. even with an expired singapore passport, as long as you can show that you are a singapore citizen, you have right of entry into singapore...
however, if you are going to another country, you have no right of entry into THEIR country.. you are a foreigner to them and because of that, you have to abide by their laws... if they insist on the 6 month validity, they have the right to not let you into their country... heck! even if you have a brand new passport, they have the right to not let you into their country.. and you have no say in it at all...
the 6 months validity is some international law thing.. or something.. everyone adheres to it... if the immigration fellas the other side lets it slide, then it's their right, and your privilege...
figure out the difference between rights and privileges... and it all falls into place..
