Final curtain for Kallang Theatre on Mar 31
SINGAPORE: One of Singapore's iconic arts venues, Kallang Theatre, will be closing down, come March 31 next year.
The stage for world class musicals since 1986, Kallang Theatre has hosted major international productions such as Cats and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and local arts festivals.
It was also the venue for National Day rallies and political dialogues.
The National Arts Council is shutting down the theatre after careful review of its strategic relevance to Singapore's arts facilities and infrastructure.
It says since the opening of the Esplanade, there has been a 20 percent drop in the use of Kallang Theatre.
Its inability to host large-scale events is another key factor.
But even as the final curtain is drawn in March next year, Singaporean audiences will no doubt continue to cherish the many historical and cultural memories they have of Kallang Theatre. -

i miss van kleef aqaurium...
i remebered they had huge fish -
i had fond memories of the kallang theatre
it was the place tt held and witnessed many of my public performances and competitions when i was young........
rode past it jus a few days ago.......
was still thinking of the times we assembled and waited outside......and then ushered to backstage to prepare to perform.......
sad to see it go.....but im glad i had a piece of it when it was around...... -

it's all part of urban redevelopment and better management of resources...........
sad but bo bian leh..........have to accept one loh........... -

Agreed. But it's easier to build a new structure than upgrade the existing one sometimes. It's a bugger but it also reflects something good - more people use these buildings so we need bigger ones.
And cherished as they are, a new generation didn't grow up with em, so the lack of attachment is understandable. -
