  If you observed carefully, Ryuk never intends to help Light at all. Both of them do things their own way. Ryuk was just enjoying himself while watching the fight between L and Light. In the end, Light loses, and therefore Ryuk knows that it's useless to go on anymore, and thus decided to end Light's life himself.
  
  What I cannot understand is, why L will write only 23 days in the notebook when he could have write 10years and die 10years later.

  The limit of the book is 23 days from his investigation, search death note on wikipedia, it also says that.

  the rules said that the note can only control up to 23 days of 1 person's life before he die..., so 23 is the max oledi ...

  to add on, if ryuk wrote down the names of the others, he would prolong light's life and thus turn into sand, anyway L cant be killed cos he wrote down his name first thus it takes precedence over anything written later
