Unfortunately, by the time the elites feel the pinch, things are already quite bad because the elites always insulate themselves from the "discomforts" of the societies they create around them. Why do you think the elites build villas for themselves in some other countries or why they fund crazy ideas like colonizing the moon. Its to get away from the troubles of the masses that they feed off from. Its been like this from time immemorial, that's why from time to time there are revolutions and all the elites get massacred. Then the cycle starts all over again. Of course, smart elites know what's best for them and try to build a "just" society even though that's technically impossible, so that these sort of massacres don't occur too often. Of course, sincerity counts alot too these days.
Then why did taiwan lost its seat to the PRC in the UN and why cant the 2 co exsist in the UN?Originally posted by siaokau:by the UN and the rest of the world. the People's Republic of China (China excluding Taiwan and it's drift islands [Roc]) however, refuse to acknowledge Taiwan as a foreign country, thus the hostility between them. Exactly. United Nations recognized PRC when they "switch" membership as you called it... as though ROC never existed.Originally posted by siaokau:They were not expelled... the UN merely switched it's membership to PRC's.. this is cos of the rule of recognising each splinter state to it's original government.
Since most of the member countries of the UN recognise Taiwan as a sole country, it is only sensible that the UN still recognises Taiwan. Written, but not assumed.
In order to maintain its PR status among other countries, Singapore continued economic and military ties with Taiwan since 1992. Taiwanese CAN enter Singapore.Originally posted by thoreldan:singapore do not recognise taiwan as a country
we dont even stamp on their passport when they come visit singapore

The UN as a whole made the rule of not acknowledging splinter states but instead their superiors after WWII (when UN was formed) mainly for avoiding the trouble. Another member country means another opinion in international issues. However for each individual country in the UN, another country on the globe means more avenue for economic gains. That's why most countries still have relations with taiwan-whether official or unofficial even though they claim not to recognise Taiwan as a lone country.Originally posted by mhcampboy:Exactly. ROC tried to gain membership into UN, but they never made it past the reviewing committee. Because, UN regards ROC as part of PRC.
Ok. If it makes you happy. I agree that many countries in the world has links with Taiwan mainly due to economic gains. They have their own currency, military and police might and economic stronghold.Originally posted by siaokau:The UN as a whole made the rule of not acknowledging splinter states but intead their superiors after WWII (when UN was formed) mainly for avoiding the trouble. Taiwan does not have a UN membership. Most states do not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign country, including Singapore.Originally posted by siaokau:The UN as a whole made the rule of not acknowledging splinter states but instead their superiors after WWII (when UN was formed) mainly for avoiding the trouble.
