Lucky fisherman lands 8 million yen in cash
The Yomiuri Shimbun
A fisherman landed a bag filled with about 8 million yen in 10,000 yen bills at the mouth of Tedorigawa river in Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture, on Saturday, according to police.
The man--a local resident--was fishing for sea perch on a breakwater when he felt his line snag on something at about 7 a.m., the police said.
After landing the bag, which also contained antiseptic and some paper, the man reported the find to the local police station.
The police said the fisherman will be allowed to keep the money unless the original owner comes forward to claim it, with proof of ownership, within six months. Until then, the Hakusan city government is to keep the money as a "flotsam object" as defined by the Sea Disaster Relief Law.
