They have to ask about your family lar. Some business are afriad to have conflict of interests hence. Like where company secrets could be leaked.
But if you think that is silly, you might consider not working at mindef, because they demand your parents nric numbers as well. And if you ever wonder if they ever use it, they do, they even counter check it with ica somemore. Hell of a problem for you if one of your parents happen to be a PR. -

Interviewer: 'You plan to study engineering in NUS. Yet according to your application form, you were a medic during NS. I'm confused.... why did you choose to be a medic instead of a combat engineer?' -
I had one silly woman who thinks so great about herself. She asked my why my grades suffered after I joint JC and quickly answered for me that I must have a BF therefore my grades were bad therefore I am unsuitable for a position of managing some stupid computers.
I didn't say a word. Just Mmmm, Mmmmm, Mmmm through. -

If its the latter, then your boss' actions is actually a kind of harrassment. I have had similar experience with an ex HOD of mine... She did something similar to what your boss did; basically turning the department into a pseudo religious group.
She got fired in the end..... -
