What is PHD about?

I am a final year student in NTU and my prof has offered a PHD position. It is very surprising because my grades are not good and i am definitely not a top student.
The PHD will be tentatively 3 years, depending on research output.
I have a few questions on this matter.
Basically, is PHD only about research? Will there be subjects to study or exams to take?
Will I be able to graduate this july and continue on as a postgrad or is graduation delayed?
What happens if there is no satisfactory discovery or output after 3 years?
And lastly, I plan to work outside and not permanently be a researcher in academic circles. Will a PHD be useful?

i think in ntu there should be modules but won't be like undergrad so many.
if you going to work outside, depends on what you want to do. if i'm not wrong if you go private sector jobs which don't need the phd at all, you might be penalised int he selection because you are over-qualified
you will still get your degree this july/june. phd is postgrad.
erm if i not wrong the phd is dependent on publishing a certain numebr of papers and the supervisor's approval. -

Unless you have strong reasons to pursue it.
Three years of PhD training is three years not building on your career progression.
To graduate with PhD the most important thing is to fulfill your thesis requirements, not publish n number of papers. -

In science you have to discuss with supervisor to write a thesis proposal.
Thesis proposal = background of research area, your specific research interest (may need a hypothesis), techniques, current results and future plans/timeline of experiments.
After you submit your proposal you have about 2 years to fulfill the plan. Along the way you are expected to publish a few peer-review papers.
When your data collection is complete, time to write-up your thesis. -

2nd upper can qualify for phd scholarship.

If you want to go into gaming, I thought NTU has their research on gaming? Maybe even linked with LucasArt, EA and rest of industry.
Data mining like not very related to gaming.
Won't you want to spend your three years pursuing some positions in the gaming industry? They might even sponsor you for higher studies. -

If you complete your thesis and obtain a doctrate, people will treat you with respect and your pay will be damn good, instead of Mr XXX, people will refer you as Dr XXX. You can also work at the university as a professor. Now, wouldn't that be nice?

unless your research is so ulu that you don't collaborate, not even with your supervisor. -
wif ur basic degree, u could be in the mid-high mgt next time, but wif a Ph.D, u might be in the top management in no time
i think the 3 yrs of non-progression in career is neglible, dun believe, go open classfifieds, u be surprised they are offering 5 digits for Ph.d positions
u may like gaming or wad, but i hope ur realise, reality is something n dreams are another, programming is ground work, and prolly mid-low management position
u may not be a programmer, but u may have programmers working for u next time
always plan for the future, u might think ur degree is ok for now, but if u think again, singapore is progressing so fast now, ur degree will be a basic qualification 10yrs down the road
if u realise perhaps, 10-20 yrs ago, the basic education for society penetration is Os and Ns, do u see jobs for them now ?
now mostly is Dips and As, while degrees are still considered advance education,
with the rate it is going dun be suprised basic degrees takeover dips in no time

Ph.D = Doctorate in philosophy
our regular medical officers are
D.SC = Doctorate in Science, a.ka medicine
so mate, not many pple have chances like u, grab it if ur family can afford or if ur offer a scholarship
my friend, who is also doing his Ph.d at the same time in NTU, so-called sells his thesis back to NTU at the same time for 1000plus a month, imagine being paid to be studying, how nice , of cos ur thesis will be published as NTU 's works n not yours
i have always been thinking abt futhuring my diploma, but then being the eldest son in a average singapore family, i guess i got to shelve it off for sometime
so plan hard, talk to ur professor, dun ask ard in forums, as i believe much of the crowd here are actually alot more younger than us, no offence

A good one will ask - do you have the passion?
Paper qualification is not everything. Just meet the requirement. The rest is up to you and the job you do.
There is always on the job training and paper qualification *outside* the university. For example, CFA for business, CCNA for computer networks etc.
