Route 1 8yrs
the dip which I dont like(3 years) --> NS (2 years) --> the dip which I like(3 years).
Route 2 6yrs
[deferment]1 year for private O level (1 year) --> [disruption]dip which I like(3 years) --> NS(2 years).
Actually I prefer Route 2, but my mum prefer route 1.
Route 1 have a problem, after some of my analysis...
1) Are you taking O-lvl again after NS? If not, how you know u can surely get into the course in poly u wanted?
2) Besides from what i heard, poly not cheap, 1 semester don't know how many thousands... If your parents rich then nothing to say, if not, you will be paying don't know how many thousands and wasting 3 yrs for something you don't like.
3) Plus, I heard instances that some people picked up course they dun like, cannot 'ta han' then halfway drop out or never drop out but retained for failing test, cause dun like very hard to study.
4) And, after NS can you guarantee, you still have the heart to study?
If you have given this a thought and you think your endurance super good, then you want, u can choose this route.
For route 2,
1) you sure your pure chem can get A1? To tell you the truth, my sister from special stream, studying triple science. Of all the sciences, my sister is having most difficulties with pure chem and complained difficult. I'm not trying to infer u cannot get A1, but pure chem have more things to learn from sub chem, if I'm not wrong, you mentioned that you are combined science student. Is your sub chem foundation good? Like one say, they have moderation.
2) Others have 2 years to prepare (Sec 3 and 4), whereas you only have 1 year to prepare and must squeeze in all the additional topics and polish up your other topics you are weak in.
3) Same as route one, what if you fail to defer your NS? Can you guarantee you have the heart to study after that? For your info, in chinese they have a sentence 'One day is enough to be lead astray', what's more 2 years in NS?
Well its just my analysis for those route you mentioned which i felt it is important to consider if you haven't and if you really must go through either of this route.
For me, I would suggest dun think about it now, wait for the result which will be release at the second week of Feb (like me) and then plan what to do next (After getting result, you still have about 1 week or so to plan/consider).
Also, is it really a must to get into this course? Do you have backup course for you to choose, cause even if u really get A1 for pure chem, still can't guarantee you to get in, you will never know what will happen, standard might increase or decrease over the years.
All of the above I mentioned might not apply to you, but can be serve as a guide. Think about it.
Anyway - I look at two of a private insituition I know (bmc.edu.sg and informatics), they only provide combined science. Expect all other private insituitions to be the same.
