The Peranakan

What is the true definition of a peranakan? Straits-born Chinese and descendants? People other than natives born in Indonesia? I once had a friend who called himself Hailam -Peranakan....hey got such thing or not? Not long ago I heard about Thai-Peranakan,The chinese who came to Thailand and married with the Thai royal family blood.......hey got such thing or not? Because the first one doesnt concern me but the second one does so if anybody got any info please share.

Long before your time in the southern province of China, there is a group of chinese who wants to venture out of china to find greener pastures.
They land themselves in Malacca which was a popular shipping port back then...
They are so called the first group of chinese who settled down in Malacca and form families with the locals there.
Their offsprings eventually created an ethnic group called Peranakan as they are born in Malacca and have a tradition and custom of chinese and malays commingled.
Being chinese of course they have different dialect in Peranakan as you can find hokkien, teochew, hailam and mostly southern parts of China.
As for Thai peranakan i never heard of.

Not fair man! hailam can be a member of peranakan family and Thai cannot meh?? Long Long time ago in Thailand there was a Great General and his name was also Taksin (teochew guy) he opened doors for his kakilang to migrate to Bangkok and business flourished by the chaophraya river.Like the Chinese who married Malay women in Malacca,these Chinese mingled with the descendants of Thai Royalty....and there you have Thai Peranakan.I also have the hokkien version.Some straits born chinese *hokkien lang from Penang went north into Thailand and they married the Thai chinese there...so LPPL you also get Thai Peranakan.I just found this out from the internet>Thank you GOOGLE

Whaddah...Thats why I ask for the true definition of peranakan.In Indonesia a peranakan means those non natives like Indians,Baba and nyonya ,BHai,Arabs........even Hailam oso can.In Singapore and Malaysia only the stratis born chinese .In Thailand,the chinese with Thai blood.So what to do now? Lonchampas and see who win IZIT?

To cut it short, last time the king of Malacca married a Chinese to...upgrade his relationship with China, which was one of the biggest powers in the world. Then, Malays started to marry Chinese and POOF! it became Peranakan!

my ah bu is peranakan so effectively, i'm 1/4 of it. It's just that they are Malacca starits chinese den called Peranakan lo.. as to why they speak malay i dunoe la..

About the Malacca King story I oso know that one.....oreddy.So basically there are many kinds of Peranakan but those from Malacca speak Malay very well.I think at present there are only a few thousand Peranakans in Singapore who can speak their dialect (peranakan) fluently and this language is dying out.Someone said Peranakan eat with their hands....maybe they were just eating Masala Dosai in Serangoon.Did you know that LKY is half peranakan and also Abdul Rahman Wahid.
