It's sad to find such narrow minded and ignorant people in Singapore... Most of the things that Peter Kwan mentioned are actually the acts of irresponsible owners and stray animals... I used to have a cat before, and I find some of the "facts" mentioned by Peter Kuan ridiculous. (He obviously has no idea that a domesticated cat can be more well-behaved than himself.)
1. Dirtying public property.
Cats can easily be toilet-trained. If you put some cats' pee or poo on a tray of sand or a tray of newspaper, the cat will recognise the smell in the tray and it will go to the tray for all its toilet business. (That's how I trained my cat.)
2. Noise.
Cats are generally quieter than dogs. If you only keep one cat, everything is quiet, because the cat has nobody to fight with or mate with...
3. Smell.
Not all cats have odour. If you wash and groom your cat frequently, it will not smell. Even if a cat has a smell, the smell is just a matter of personal preference, like durian. (Is Peter Kwan going to write to HDB to ban durians just because some people hate durians?)
4. Disease.
Cat-owners have to be responsible for feeding proper food, cleaning their cat frequently, and taking their cat to the vet regularly to prevent the danger of diseases. When I had a cat, I also frequently trimmed the cat's claw.
5. Animal abuse.
There may be many case of animal abuse in the news, but for every abuse case I know, I know more cases of happy pets and happy pet-owners...
"Peter Kwan, you better watch out!"
