I think your view is 180 degrees out of whack.
Even with so much cynicism around, money is still underrated.
Many people including myself who used to believe in the importance of other things like happiness, knowledge and justice were hit with the realization of how powerful money is.
BOOM! As subtle as a sledgehammer.
First and foremost, money is not independent from happiness, knowledge, power, self-confidence... and any other "intangibles" you can think of. -

well, money is a tool, not an ends.. people forget that..
it can buy a bed, but not sleep
it can buy a clock, but not time
it can buy you a book, but not knowledge
it can buy you a position, but not respect
it can buy you medicine, but not health
it can buy you blood, but not life
it can buy you sex, but not love
it is overrated in people's drive toward accumulating it..
however, it is underrated when it comes to using it to smooth the path towards happiness..
it's in the way that you use it...
