[b]Now tell me, between a Malay from Singapore and a Malay from Malaysia, whose Malay is better?
Just like the Chinese, Malays also have many dialects stretching from the Pacific islands to Sri Langka to Madagascar and even Surinam (South America) there are basically two types of Malay spoken in Malaysia. One is Pattani Malay which is spoken in South Thailand and the Northern Malaysian states (formerly part of Thailand)the other is Riau Malay, spoken by SIngapore Malays,Some parts of Sumatra , the riau islands and Aku bodoh of course.Every Malay same same here.no one is better than the other linguistically.BTW I like your honesty in choosing such a nickname

Just try hopping to one of the islands and listen to their conversation
Even Singapore or Malaysian Malays wouldnt understand
Got one friend whose dad hometown was thereOriginally posted by Short Ninja:When you were in the southern islands( dowan to ask what your were doing there :mrgreenThe people you hear speaking dialects are the Bataks or predominantly the Padangs.Just as English having many root words from German,Bahasa Malaysia had lots of root words from Minangkabau(Padang) most likely the word BUTOH also. You can find most Padang people in the state of Negri Sembilan.
