Humiliation the result of poor discipline?

Just something that has been roving the school scene:
"Give offenders a chance!"
A Fuhua Secondary School student is very unhappy about her school grooming exercise, and how students are affected by what they see is an act of humiliation.
“I am upset that recently during morning assembly the school checked the girls, and I thought offenders would be giving a warning, and get a chance to get their hair cut after school. However it was not so.
The offenders were sent to the principalÂ’s office and their fringes were cut short. These students came out crying as they looked ugly.
I think this was a public act of humiliation. Everyone wants to look good but with this hairstyle, if you were them you wonÂ’t step out of the house to face other people. And these students will care more about how their hair looks now and not concentrate on their studies. I think the principal just made things worse.
My friendÂ’s two friends cried for almost two hours and couldnÂ’t even concentrate in class and in their CCA.
WhatÂ’s the point of making us feel so humiliated we canÂ’t concentrate on our studies? I thought education should come first. Furthermore, the principal should at least give the offenders a chance before doing this; the students can pin up or cut their hair themselves. I feel that the principal is in the wrong to just cut away the studentsÂ’ hair like that without caring about how they feel and never even give them chances to go cut their hair after school or to pin them up.
Also, the principal scolds students who wear jackets in school when it's cold. They feel we wear the jacket as a fashion statement and said that it's not part of the schoolÂ’s attire and we shouldnÂ’t be wearing them even if itÂ’s cold or windy. WeÂ’re told to report to the office if we are really sick and they will call our parents, and then allow us to wear our jackets. But there isnÂ’t a jacket designed for us to wear. Should we all go sew the school logo on our jackets before we are allowed to wear them?
The principal actually wants students who wear coloured bras to remove them and get their parents to bring white bras for them to change into, but what happens if both parents are working? Should the girl go walking around the school without a bra? Worse, this is a co-ed school and itÂ’s humiliation to the girls. The principal doesnÂ’t care about how we really feel.
Toilet lights are also switched off to save electricity bills and we can hardly see in the afternoons. It is almost pitch-black on rainy days. The only time when the toilet lights are switched on again is when important guests visit, which I think is really unfair to us students. The school would rather spend money building a statue and it look nothing more that a man with two thumbs up and place it among some bushes. I think itÂ’s a waste of money and the school actually saves money from electricity bills to build that statue which is of no use at all. They should rather go spend the money helping poor and needy students.
I really hope the school will concentrate more on our education than on grooming and making us feel so humiliated.” -
I wish the principal of Fuhua Sec. dies of a stroke or heart attack or even better....car accident.

One thing that is still unknown is whether those girls were actually given prior previous warnings.
Are they as innocent as they are made out to be? Or is this their repeated offense? -
can't the girls refuse to remove their ungarments? i mean what can the school do to you if you refuse, use force ah?

The jacket & the bra thing is stupid. Sometimes schools go overboard with their rules & they sound totally pointless/unnecessary. -

"Grace period and extensions are always given," responded Mr Phor Hoay Guan, Vice Principal, Fuhua Secondary School after STOMP contacted the school following a student's email to us.
Mr Phor explained that students who "fall short of expectations" are monitored by teachers to ensure they do comply with rules.
This is the email Fuhua Secondary sent to STOMP.
"In Fuhua Secondary, discipline and pastoral care form the foundation for our approach towards a holistic education for our pupils. The school nurtures and encourages each pupil to develop a sense of discipline. One component of discipline is the observance of school rules."
The students who "fall short of expectations", are monitored and advised by teachers.
Should they fail to comply with rules they are warned, and sterner disciplinary action taken against the offenders.
The school also explains the reason for switching off toilet lights, that these "are efforts towards energy-saving", and that this message was conveyed to staff and students when the practice was implemented in 2005.
The lights, the school clarifies, are switched on during rainy days or when the sky is dark. -

Next time the student also must set a rule for all teachers to wear all white outfits & cut short hair lah, this is to give the teachers a sense of belonging & unity ma. Just give them a grace period of one year. More than enough

I daresay the principal has made it known that colour bras are not allowed. If students still wear them to school, the school has every right to request them to remove it and change into a white one.
Of course, like someone above mentioned, the school can't force them to remove their bras if they don't want to, but they can ask them to get lost and never come back again.

I came from strict methodist schools. we have our own socks and jackets to wear. Not allowed to wear gold frame specs and hair has to be neat or tied up with black/blue colors. Skirt length, hair lengths are made known, and coloring hair is no no. No wearing of t-shirt under shirt, no wearing of bright underwear that is visible Etc. If you break the rules, its confiscation, and such penality. In the past, this was how discipline was dished out. I don't see what's so harsh. I had seen students get shaved bald before. What so big deal?
In my methodist school, all these are made know the first day we enter school. We are given school diary and the first few pages are the school rules.
Therefore it is no excuse for not knowing. Therefore, on the first day of school, when the teacher will definitely check, then i only blame the students for being stupid and making their own lives difficult. If they want to rebel, the school has ever right to ensure everyone obey the rules. If the student don't repect the school rules and respect themselves by getting ready for school, then the school cannot be blamed for taking action.
Give chance? Sometimes school give once chance, students will ask for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and endless chance. here's one student kicking up a fuss telling their side of the story. Hair only, cry for what. -
If it's a white uniform, it'll show easily. I don't know what colour Fuhua's uniform is, but if it's white, I suppose you'll understand why the school rules dictate that there shall be no colour bras. yes. The guy dye his hair. It had to be taken off totally.
After the school did that, we totally respected the rules and the teachers. They had the balls to carry out the rules and stick to their words.
Agreed, all these things about looks should not matter to students, and would not make the students pass their exams. But these are students, so why are looks so important to them that when they are asked to follow the rules, they will always break it and cry over a bunch of hair? -
misty, some of the gals were like, caught for the 1st time and some even kept their fringes NEATLY but yet a minority of teachers actually tried to reveal the fringe, and there goes their fringe. in my past 4 years at fuhua, no such humiliation has been dished out to any student, even if their fringes werent well-kept or whatsoever. even though boys caught with long hair for the 2nd/3rd time were sent to the school barber. as for the gals, they were asked to use a hair clip/inverted-U shaped hair accessory to neaten their hair. [that is how it should be] only if anyone tries to be defiant for the 3rd time, the form teacher would take action and send her to the DM.
and the DM is much more reasonable/'civilised' than the OM. especially when he is an ex-officer.
and from my observations, only about 10% of all the teachers there would go ALL THE WAY to enforce those rules laid out no matter how crazy they were. most of the teachers i see usually give more than enough chances than needed if the infringement isn't too serious [fingernails, hair, hairstyle]
stratus, actually ANY COLOUR ALSO CAN, as long as it DOESNT REVEAL TOO CLEARLY. [like light sky blue, light shades/tones of any colour] even if no white is available, white with a light shade of red/skyblue/yellow/pink/brown is ok.
joe, SOME of those gals were warned beforehand. only some were unfortunate as stated above. an update i got ytd was that the DM claimed the school was just joking regarding the forced removal of bras. -
