Hokien are not originally vulgar or ugly looking.
If you know our Singapore history majority of the Chinese who migrate here are coolies or labours, farmers, fishermen or samsui women etc Most of them are poor education background and poor diet habits. Due to hardship and frustration it is naturally language becomes vulgar and ungrammatical. Some how the generation that follow tends to inherit all the vulgar speech from the previous generation
To break away from this social sigmas, Now these generation has been much more educated, are well fed, better looks should put away those vulgar and unseemly words. Speak proper good hokien sentences. Don't know go and learn from those mainland china or Taiwan. Visit the home town in Hokien province. or watch Hokien movies
I know recently in my area, there are ladies who migrate from China to Singapore recently are good looking, tall, sexy, well spoken, eloquent hokien and mandarin. If she did not tell me she is from Hokien province I don't even know.
If you observe at how the Taiwanese speak Hokien you can see how much difference. -

No wad. Hokkien's just a dialect and a dialect has no pretty/ugly. It's neutral ok.
Secondly, since it's juz a dialect, it depends on the person using the dialect to communicate. Our LKY has used hokkien on national tv before wad but he'd handled it veri well.........

hokkien province have many dialects .like minnan(taiwanese) .foochow . hakka . ..only south part of hokkien ppl speak hokkien which should be called min nan dialect .
