I read quite alot. But i dont see it helping me much. -

There's a book by Barron's, written by Murray Bromberg and Melvin Gordon. The title is "1100 Words You Need To Know". Should come in handy for you if you would like to expand your vocabulary.
There is one assignment for each day of the year, and for each assignment, they first give you a short passage containing new words for the day, so you can have a glimpse of how they may be used.
Then there'll be sentences with blanks for you to fill in with the correct words, and lastly you'll be asked to match definitions to words.
At the end of each page, there's also an idiom and its explanation...
Grammar-wise... I don't know, does it come naturally as you read more (good) books? -
Read a lot is great!
However depends on what you read. Read news paper a lot won't help much. Why? News paper are made with english level of gred 3. It is not that our reporters are lousy, just that news paper must cater for the population of the country. Thus, you won't gain much...
When read, go for magazines like Times. They offer great materials to improve ones English. Go for CNN and stuff. Another great source is novel. Try avoid romatic novel or such. Suspence or criminal novel will be of better help.
Dictionary is another great tool. We tend to read through words that are difficult. We even praised ourself that we can guess the meaning of a certain word by reading the whole sentence. Bad mistake! We actually miss the opportunity to know another new word thus improving ourself.....

when using msn or replying in forums and smsing use proper english it helps !
and try to replace simple word with better word with the same meaning
look up for the meaning of word/s if you don't understand what it means
by doing this you will improve for sure
watching english shows might help too like The Arena

It all depends very much on the company you keep, the language used at home with family members, how much and what you read, the TV programs you watch, and which language you THINK in.
That's right, thinking has a language too.
IN Singapore, it is difficult to say - speak proper English in daily life. Why? Because when you do, people around you such as the hawker, the Taxi driver, or simply any person on the street you speak 'proper English' to, may not understand you well. Or worse, feel that you are trying to be Ang Mo.
Therefore, improving in the English language can rightly remain a private, niche, and onerous endeavour. -
Reading newspaper daily..and over time,u will feel that your english has improved

Ya....watch TV / movies.
When you absorb the movie, you will follow and understand the language.
Read magazines also...
Just relaxing stuff.....activities which don't make you feel like you are learning or doing a chore. You will have fun, and at the same also absorb the language naturally.

Always speak your best English.
Our problem is with our family and friends we speak Singlish easily.
When giving a speech, we speak good English
When writing we use good English.
Therefore from now, on speak your best English with everybody, even with the Bangla who cleans your estate.
Practice.
Tune in to the BBC, and let it run as background sound the whole day, 7 days a week. -

i would say, read and read and read...
proper stuff that is...
one of the best things to read, i would say, is the Asterix comics... although a lot is lost in the translation, the translators have done a great job with the stories...
you will slowly pick up the words as well as how you use them when you start to discover that each line, each name and everything they say mean more than just what is written... just like their names..
Asterix, the hero, comes from the word "Asterisk" which is usually used in books and documents to denote something special.. because he is the hero, he's intelligent and the star of the series... that is, he's special..
Obelix, comes from "obelisk" which is a huge rock carving that stands up.. he is also a menhir-carver and deliveryman.. menhirs are obelisks.. and he is also a rock which Asterix can depend on.. he's also a big man.. someone dependable, a rock...
then there's Cacophonix, the bard, whose name comes from "cacophony" or noise.. he thinks he's a musician of exceptional talent but his sonnets and songs drive people away.. in other words, he is a "noise maker" or a source of a cacophony...
go read the comics.. and look for the hidden meanings in the stories... the meaning written there is funny but the hidden meanings are funnier.. which is the genius of this series..
