there are three checks which MUST be carried out by the homeowner AND the housing agent if you use one..
1. check the original work permit.. make sure the work permit picture is the same as the fella standing in front of you.. check for expiry date, make sure the things like gender all that are correct...
2. check the original passport.. make sure the picture in the passport is the same as the fella standing in front of you... and the particulars like name, gender, nationality, date of birth is the same in the passport..
3. call or write to MOM to check validity of the work permit.. if it is valid, you may rent the place to the person only as long or for a shorter time of the validity of the work permit...
if it is not a work permit but other types of passes, like employment pass, check with the correct people... employment pass => MOM, if student pass or dependent pass, check with ICA..
you can check with ICA online at the ICA website.. they will require you to give your particulars and will give you a written reply.. keep that reply in case your tenants get into trouble.. if you have done your three checks, you are safe...

HDB got law against renting rooms to illegal workers and punishment could be fine and jail...
Cannot escape that but can or not sue the illegal workers for the fine amount assuming they give you false work permit etc...?
