Diver missing in Pulau Hantu

SINGAPORE : The body of a missing diver was found in the waters off Pulau Hantu at around 9.40 am on Tuesday.
Singaporean Sue Qing Wen, who is in his 20s and who had just finished his National Service, was reported missing on Saturday, the eve of the Lunar New Year.

was there at hantu about 2 weeks ago...strong underwater currents...viz not good as usual. -

Pulau Hantu, tho the dive site is very shallow (abt 10m to 14m depth) but poor visibilities (about 1m to 1.5m viz).
I always feel that Pulau Hantu site are not meant for fresh openwater certification divers without guidance. Especially with poor underwater navigation skill and bouyance control. That is why there is a saying "If you can dive in pulau Hantu, you can dive anywhere".

Yes i've only been there 2 times... The visibility is near to zero...Got many things biting me also....Damm itchy... Not very deep...Still rmb i wrote those down in my dive log book

I first got certified there 9 years ago, on the northern side (the jetty side) ... we swam outwards in waters with really really bad vis and had to find our way back to one of the anchor buoys with our compass ... the thing is that the current would come at you sideways, and because the vis was so bad, you wouldn't realize that you're drifting very fast sideways ....
and the currents there can be killers ... over the years there were several times where we had to abort dives because the currents were simply too strong ...
the funny thing is that local divers seem to hold it to be sort of a distinction to be locally certified, there's this "if you can dive in Singapore waters, you can dive anywhere" mentality ....
well ... I last dove there in 05', and now I tell people, don't bother, get yourself certified over a weekend in tioman or aur, there's nothing left to see in Singapore waters anyways, and diving in longkang waters may just turn you off scuba permanently ...

not the first time wad. Pulau Hantu and the nearby Sisters Islands are notorious for very strong undersea currents and undersea caves such that they pose a danger even for experienced divers, let alone the younger less experienced ones...... -

there's a wreck just off sisters' island where two off duty new zealand soldiers stationed here under FPDA drowned in while diving ... apparently they penetrated the wreck, raised a lot of stilt, and couldn't find their way out ... -

At least his body has been found. Though sad, at least there is a conclusion to everything. I dun think it will be easy to find the body after being swept out like that.

malaysian diving season not open yet...so if want to clear open water...either have to go further or do it at hantu. -
