IT academic course / career help

thanks for your advice all!
i'm thinking of investing in the MDIS Advanced Diploma in IT, but the price is around S$6300. the price is not a problem lah, my bank got enough money to buy 50 wives from China.
the problem is : $6300 is quite a huge sum, and if taking into the account the time also, a very big gamble. somemore, i don't want to take private degree(not interest in degrees), so it's very risky if this advanced diploma is not recognized by 99.9% of the companies here.
somemore, these private IT diplomas all also like local poly diplomas: a bit rojak, a bit curry, a bit of each, all mixed up a little....and worse still, i everyday read ST Classifieds and the IT/InfoComm section super-pathetic : less than 7 jobs in one day, whereas others, like Sales, Admin, Hotel/Restaurant, Technical, Engineering all over more than 40(some got 100++ jobs!).
very bleak....somemore, they all seek IT guys with 2 years experience and above....die liao...
like that, is it worth it to pay so much for the advanced dip? Informatics also got more or less the same offer, except that their cert is awarded by the NCC(singapore's own computing authority) whereas the MDIS one is awarded by the australian Edith Cowan university(at least sounds nicer).
as for second-class jobs for private diploma holders, i don't really mind lah. even in Tuas i can also consider, because the enviroment there are more friendlier with so many Malaysians, and plus, the Malaysian-chinese girls got quite a lot all super-chio one.
on a side note, if i ask the MDIS / private schools' course consultant for advice on these issues, do u guys think they'll give me honest answers? because i scared that they'll sweet-talk you and earn commission(a lot of them all like that).

Work in government sectors first, to get the experience if you don't have.
Then quit to get another job if want to work in private sectors... but warn you first, private sectors IT jobs aren't exactly at all because of outsourcing.
Another thing is that IT knowledge that you have may not be relevant by the time you graduate, so companies might not be interested in hiring you at all...
And programming skills that you learn in school may not be used at all for some companies, due the scalability of projects, fast-changing nature of projects, etc.
As meltz says, better have a portfolio with you. -

if websai and programming, u can work as freelancer, den slowly build up.
but bear in mind also, technology changes bery fast. muz keep working to add new stuff. -

You very funny leh, you say the price is right, bank enough money no problems, then go on to say its quite a huge sum, and might be a gamble.

its juz something extra to show yer potential employer.
u can build it while studying in diploma. and earn a little extra cash oso. but dun expect good pay la. in fact prepare to get paid lower than a blangala construction worker.
i got a nifty little portfolio oso.

For your information, there seems to be more part-time students than full time students in MDIS, advance diploma in IT course. If the course education is useless, why will companies encourage or even sponsor their employees to go for the course? If money is a problem to you, you can choose to study part-time and work full time, else study full time and work part-time. For me, I am currently studying full-time in MDIS.
Study wise, IT is really a difficult field that is not suitable for just anyone. You must have a logical and analytical mind to actually understand how computer systems really work. Modern computer systems are very very complex. An operating system alone can contain BILLIONs of lines of code, more code = more bugs = more security vulnerabilities. If you think programming is too much for you to learn, IT is really not for you.
Work wise, IT management or development professions are usually very stressful because of the high responsibility that they have to bear. You worry about information system that does not work perfectly, you worry about hardware and power failures, you worry about DoS attacks, you worry about unhappy employees corrupting your database, you worry about employees stealing data and selling it to competitors, you worry about not doing enough backups and hope that nothing will ever go wrong with your information system, and if you are into system developments, you may have to cope with projects... deadline... projects... deadline... And if you develop a system that does not meet requirements, you may get sacked or even get sue by your customers. Believe me, these are the jobs/work that can ensure that you wont be sleeping well at night. If you cannot handle stress or bear heavy responsibilities, think twice before you apply for a high level IT position. -
