Japan does not have the capablity to launch another round of offense after Midway. Their top-notch pilots died in the battle, the one of the Japanese top brass was killed by an accident. It is not an overstatement to say that the Japanese were at their wit's end.
The Japanese at that time wanted to bid their time as they speculate that the Americans dare not pay the heavy casualties, due to the pressure in US, so they just beefed up their defence at various point in the country and wait. It's a very passive strategy. They think, eventually the Allies will be tired of the war and just acknowledge the Japanese possession of the conquered territories.
This was what the Japanese are thinking at that moment but the US were thinking of another thing.
The US just acquired a new toy and tested it out in a no man's land. They wanted to confirm the effect of the new toy, to counter the communist Russians. Who was the best test subject at that moment? A face-off with Russia was a very stupid move. There is no need to use the bomb on Germans as they had already surrender. The best cai tao was the Japanese. -

ya lor.. worst is those japs go unpunished after the war and still live to ripe old age and die.. the greatest jap atrocities writer Iris chang ,author of rape of nanking committed suicide at the age of 36.. anybody read about or knows the story of Jap unit 731??
its a japanese biological team that uses chinese civilians as test rats for the bio germs weapons.. its a great war crime but US covered it and gave unit 731members immunity for war crime charges in exchange for their knowledge and informations on bio warfare.. their members cut up humans alive to test on their body organs and yet they live till ripe old age and die..was never brought to court..WTF

Then both China and Taiwan were vying for Japanese support, so they both act generous.
Who should take the blame? The Americans? It's none of their business wat. They were only thinking of their own interest. Why should they ruin their own interest? -

At the very least the Japanese are still mostly anti-militaristic because it had been drilled into them all the suffering the war caused
them
... however unlike the Germans they fail to see the cast amount of suffering they caused to asia and see it as only as a very ambigious "regrettable". This is not really optimal.
Of course, not to mention there is this disturbing change in some of them becoming more confident that Japan should once again have some military adventures... but China isn't inspiring much confidence in them as well I suppose.
