SINGAPORE: A Singaporean man, who tried to smuggle cigarettes by stuffing them in his socks and swimming trunks, has been caught at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officers said they stopped him as he had unusual "bulges" on him and was behaving suspiciously.
The 45-year-old man claimed that he had bought the contraband items for his own consumption, as well as for sale to his colleagues and friends.
In all, the man had 24 packets of tobacco and 33 packets of cigarettes on him worth about $730.
ICA warned that first time offenders could be fined up to 20 times the amount of duty evaded.
Repeat offenders face up to two years' jail and fine.
