was wondering.....
do u really hit ur child/friends cuz u dote them and want them to behave well?
do u really scold ur children/friends cuz u want them to turn better?
or issit u just cant bear with it and u feel that scolding them so that they wont irritate u.......
i welcome all replies and comment except flaming.....
and especially the parents....... -
not really leh. some parents who hit their kids as punishment, do it as a form of anger venting

Punishments and admonishments must be followed up by the explanation of the rationale to make sure that the child understands that you have his or her interests at heart. Otherwise it becomes meaningless and would not have any real effect.

I think what you mean is tough love
It does work but not everyone will readily accept it

Ok, perhaps I wasn't really addressing the TS' question. I was only saying, for punishment to be effective in correcting the child's behaviour, the child has to understand the rationale for applying the punishment.
Of course, there are many other better ways to demonstrate love, affection and concern. A simple hug, for example, can do more miracles than any amount of scoldings. -

I think when parents hit their child, its to show them that they do hold a certain amount of authority over them, so its better that the child behave themself and show some respect. Afterall, parents only hit the child when they go overboard. Otherwise, i think the parent is just being violent.

To quite a large extent, I think this is true. It just depends on which perspective you choose to adopt.......

to show im serious when they screw up.
muz scold. muz hit. muz suan.
e.g. last time my students come my house take my (blunt) katana to play. den i told em cannot, very dangerous, they dun listen. den one of em swing back and poke right below my nose. heng no use strength or else i got hole in my face liao.
so i snatched the sword, chased em, corner em and poke a hole through the door right beside em, gib em see.
den they noe im dead serious.
next time they dare to play wib it again. ill poke em instead. -
well, that phrase is really a abstract, and sometimes misleading statement..but yet, it is true in certain sense..
when you scold your children, its because you want them to learn something, you dont want them to do the wrong thing or something..yes, some may argue that the same result can be produced by the 'talk nicely until you listen' method or something, but that does not take away the fact that the intention behind the scoldings is good...
of course, there are those who scold and hit simply to vent their anger...
