I would not pay $60 to buy a game when i can get a pirated one at less than $10. But if the original one is selling at $12 - I will buy original because the difference is only $2.
These movie makers / software companies are on one hand, shouting piracy is theft, on the other hand, earn huge profits, are exploiting us. Actually if they could lower their prices abit, they could see more. Thats the economies of scale - but with greed, they would not and piracy is present.
You might as well be an author and business man at the same time.
All those works, need to go through producing, wholesaling, distributing and retailing before reaching the customer's hand. In between, all these costs add up.
If you are an author and business man yourself, you make the stuff, and sell them directly, which lowers the costs by a lot and thus attract people.
The reason why pirated goods price is so attractive, because there's no such thing as retailing, distributing and wholesaling. All they need is to copy and sell direct, which is way cheaper.
Now all these companies have realized how consumers are thinking. No matter how much anti-copying you put in, it will not deter pirates.
Rather, they work with online companies, to sell these products directly. Total cost? Cheaper. And they get to earn. Even if you get them to ship to you directly, it won't even cost more than when you are buying a real physical CD/DVD.
