Frankly, if MOE did not restrict locals from attending international schools, a lot of my peers would have gone there. It's about the exposure you get to an international crowd, which prepares you when you travel, work and live abroad. -

see....international schools are mainly for your...what you call 'foreign talents' kids to attend. but because some LEE kid went to SAS, so now, local pple can APPLY to attend international school.
of course its farking asspensive. cos no gabramen to subsidise mah
and oh no...dun give mi the 'cos FT all rich mah cos children can attend lor' crap. the FTs in singapore are also mainly the top few percent back in their home country, and most had to work hard to get to the position they are in today
and lets say the family moves here when the child is 16. everyone in local school having O level!!! u wan the child to attend local school now and fail issit. singapore school syllabus not the same as everywhere else one ok.
or maybe the child has no english background. international school have ESL classes. and i can tell u...that a lot of the ESL kids graduate with VERY good english!
oh yar...the accent...hmm...if pple from singapore go overseas, your english accent will also be sebei farking weird! hohoho~ they grew up speaking this way, what you want them to do?
and yes...LL is right. about the culture thingy. most of the kids there are what are known as 'TCK' (third culture kids) and we can relate to each other in school...tats why now eberyone misses high school
oh yar...and when i attended local school...hmm..i dont mind the 'where is canada? is it winter all year in canada?' kinda questions. but i HATED it when pple went 'ur canadian so u cant be chinese. do u live in an igloo and go around in sled dragged by huskies? i can imagine u with blonc hair and blue eyes' sh|t if ur stupid n ignorant, no need to show other pple wan ok...oh yar...and i hated it too how the teachers like to announce to the whole farking class i wasnt singaporean. every damn day someone woudl remind mi i was different and i didnt belong and i wasnt welcomed. at least i spoke singlish. wasnt dissed for that.
most non-singaporeans fit in and liked it A LOT better in international schools than local schools.
oh...and as for that rich and spoilt kids. u can find them in UWC and SAS. mainly. those that i know. party hard, play hard, do well academically and in co-curricular activities and get scholarships to good unis. and MANY work for their pocket-money. the culture back at their home is that 'if the kids want something, they work for it'. not like singapore where kids whine, and parents give.

and I personally think that there are a lot of stereotypes associated with schools. in fact, someone just called members of a school I feel closely connected to "ugly and low" simply because they belong to that particular school. oh, and also because they beat them in a certain sport =). -

Nah, no offence but I think thats bullshit. School nowadays teaches alot abt the world. These are given by the MOE to teach about the responsibility of being a singaporean. Int School are just for foreigners whose parents are expats posted here.
Vocational trainings are essential, and they are balanced with books teaching.
Sure, mix with the international crowd, but thats just a pretty flimsy reason. You don't mix with "an international crowd" so as to "prepare to live and work aboard".
Its just doesnt make sense. If your kids know how to Zuo Ren, living everywhere shouldnt be a problem.

I've been to both an international and local school and trust me international schools are way better. The education system is better and the teachers are better. In local schools a lot of the teachers don't really care about the students. I would rather have my kids exposed from young to be educated to think and be allowed to express themselves. That's where our national school system fails. And it's horrific because without the ability to be confident chaps who can swim in any sea, Singaporeans are going to suffer when they are taken out of this little island.
Face it, being cosmopolitan is the only thing we can leverage on in the future.
And nope, I wouldn't want my kids to speak like an angmoh, but I would sure as hell want them to be able to relate with everyone as an equal without prejudice and that silly concept of race. -

my friends and i play soccer every week there. and there are a group of international students there.
there are chinese guys who speak with an accent, but i don't mind.
the thing that make me angry is that:
my malay friend fell down, and they said out loud "look at the niger!"
laughs were heard the next moment.
what really pisses me off is that that malay friend is a good friend of mine.
