In 1842, the Qing authorities sued for peace, which concluded with the Treaty of Nanjing negotiated in August of that year and accepted in 1843. In the treaty, China agreed to open several low-tariff trade ports to Britain, yielded Hong Kong to Britain, and allowed British missionaries to work in China.
In 1860, at the Convention of Peking, China ratified the Treaty of Tientsin, ending the war, and granting a number of privileges to British (and other Western) subjects within China.
Chiang Kai-shek fled with the remnants of his government to Taiwan in 1949 and his Nationalist Party would control the island as well as a few neighboring islands until democratic elections in the late 1990s. Since then the political status of Taiwan has always been under dispute. - SO WEAK! CHINA Cant even protect their own land from a fleeing army of remnants!!
The treaty ending the war was signed on June 9, 1885, as China acknowledged the Treaty of Hué and gave up its suzerainty over the Empire of Annam. Annam and Tonkin were incorporated into French Indochina soon thereafter. The French victory highlighted the weakness of the Chinese government and aroused nationalistic feelings in Southern China.
Faced with defeat, China signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki on 17 April 1895. This treaty agreed to the total independence of Korea and ceded the Liaodong Peninsula in southern Fengtian Province, Manchuria (present-day Liaoning Province, China), Taiwan and the Pescadores Islands to Japan "in perpetuity". Additionally, China was to pay Japan 200 million Kuping taels (which were about the price of purchasing the German and British built modern battleships) as reparation, signed a commercial treaty permitting Japanese ships to operate on the Yangtze River, to operate manufacturing factories in treaty ports and to open four more ports to foreign trade. It symbolized the rise of Japanese imperialism. The victory proved Japan to be on equal grounds with the western powers and the dominant power in Asia. Its fast industrial and political developments and economical expansions are often compared to that of Germany, which was unified around the same time as the political revolution in Japan during the 1860s, and which surged to become the strongest nation in Europe. - WHAT A WEAKLING - CHINA!
