Should females be conscripted for National Service?

I believe that the gender disparity has greatly reduced from say 5 years ago.
as the Singapore society move towards being a society displaying equality between gender..
i ask if Singapore should conscript females for National Service like the Isralis?
I'm posting here and not in some military forum because I believe the opinions I get here would be more of a mixed opinion.. putting it there would be a very male opinionated one..
National service means a lot of things.. it doesn't have to mean SAF.. what about any govenment sector that requires people but are short hand...
examples i can think of like hospital nurses, clerks in SAF, music and drama company, SCDF medics, SAF Medics etc along dat line..
I personally even believe that even when it comes down to combat roles, some females can do as good or even better job than some guys in the SAF judging from how the SAF has changed from a physically demanding force to a more brain demanding force with it's influx of hi tech equipment.. everyhitng comes down to pressing of the button..
what do everyone think?

seriously imo, i dun really like women in army dress. (got exceptions doh)
so they could all be either nurses or paramedic.
or they can be the 'cookhouse aunties'.

Anything, 2 years of extra service won't kill me despite my medical records.

There's no need at the moment. We are not in a situation like Israel's.
It's not so much about gender equality here. Rather, it's about whether there's such a need. Should PAP conscript females in this time of peace, they are sure to lose huge votes and support. -

but wad abt equality issue?
since i believe Singapore is very much like the US, we value time .. time is money and is a veyr expensive commodity.. we can see this thru our culture of turning up for appointments on time and have a scheduled plan for the day or meetings.. only shows how we value time..
so if time is such an impt issue, then i believe the guys are losing out a lot!
so how to explain this.. fairness thrown out the window?

ok then wad abt other sectors.. there's definitely a real shortages in other sectors where the duties are easily performed..
conscripting females would solve quite a number of manpower issues..
wad about doing 2 years of minimally paid service at any of the charitable organisations? -

Israel have females conscripted because they were facing Arab neighbours who are determined to seek their annihilation. Therefore, Israeli females have no complaints and instead, think it's an honour.
Here in S'pore, if we conscript the girls, there would certainly be very low morale. Furthermore, this millenium is different from the turbulent 1960s where our men were first conscripted. We needed an army as we just became independent. -

but i believe the basis of conscription didn't change from the 1960 till now. is to have an operational armed forces to uphold the soverignity of the nation..

and i also wan to point out that i think honour shouldnt come abt only at times of threat of annihiliation.. it's a value we should uphold in good or bad times.. -

Males aren't females, neither are females males.
If females want to be part of it, good. But doing it for the sake of fairness, is crap. -

Seek equality in other ways yeh. -
the point of conscripting males was for operational readiness.
young, able bodied males.
so if you want to conscript females. you must still adhere to the very reason why we want to have a conscript army. that is, ops readiness.
singapore has no need to put her females into battle gear for operational requirements.
we don't have the a policy like m'sia where the conscription of females is for community bonding and social cohesion. For that reason, recruiting in females is ok for m'sia.
But for sg, we are talking about ops readiness, the ability to draw arms and defend a nation. Unless TS wants all girls to share in that responsibility, fair enough. -
During mobilisation, they will give you 1001 reasons why they didn't turn up, eg. menses.

Like TS said, "conscription" don't have to be for military purposes. Actually research has shown that mass conscription has other positive social effect such as a better integrated society. The key is actually in the first 3 months of BMT where everybody goes tru more or less the same thing and people walk out of their comfort zones. NS also provide some form of national education. If we don't want to waste people's time, maybe we can consider slotting the NS in between results waiting period and let them go tru a "summer camp" like kind of BMT. Then next time just call them up in between school holidays for some sort of training. But then, this calls for more detailed research to look into the feasibility.

i still feel the system now is alright.
my gf is doing her bmt now right in tekong.. and she with the other sign-on gals are complaining that they are doing wat guys do, and bla bla and they cant take it anymore. even regulars cant take it anymore, least to say abt those who are force in.
can imagine those girls who must not get a single sun shine on her? those who takes 2 hours to facial her face? cant imagine that type of girls in saf! -
