confusing which school should i go, i only wish to learn abt pastry / coooking stuff and wish 1 day to open own small cafe. and feels how is it like to work as in food industry. wandering anybody know if we finish 2 yrs diploma course in pastry/cullinary skills, what carrer can we go or what can we work and be after the course. thanks. and is it so tough and how is the salary like?

shatec is more recognised and established here and overseas than sunrice definitely. classified has ads specifying diploma from shatec, but never sunrice.
shatec has a dip in culinary skills course which trains you to be chefs not cooks, and theres is also a dip in pastry and baking course. imo culinary skills is better, you learn briefly to cook a big variety of cuisines and also pastry classes. course fees is ~$6k/year, course is about 2 years, including 6 months UNPAID attachment with shatec restaurants, then 1 year paid attachments of you finding your own hotels.
after you completed your course and attachments you can find your own jobs with any hotel or restaurant, likely becoming chefs within a year. you will know basically how to own your own place too.
imo it is not good to work full time in the food industry, you have to work split shifts, go in the morning to prepare ingredients for lunch, then cook lunch, after lunch you clean up kitchen then waste hours before having to come back to prepare ingredients for dinner, then cook dinner, then wash up entire kitchen then go home late. the mediocre pay is not worth it. unless you are confident of becoming a top chef or own your own cafe (similar aim of 10000s not to mention there are 1000 too many restaurants already and shop space rent is up to $40000 a month)

TS, depends on what you want.. Shatec is local and the fees are way lower. @Sunrise has a degree program which is joint with Johnson and Wales of the US. One of the better Culinary schools around.. Fees are higher but chances of getting overseas exp are high !
Btw, im not a student from @sunrise and i'm not promoting em in anyways.. I learnt my trade in Canada, No school can teach or train you to become Chefs. They teach you the fundamentals, the base of Culinary, duties of a Chef thats all. You learn most of your trade when you work under different Chefs.

Wow, Shatec must really be a really good Culinary school eh ! Chef position in a year ! Wow ! how is the life of a chef, like fun is it, would love to try it a while and thenmaybe thinking of doing home based cookie business is it good? anybody here been to that "sunrice or shatec school" how is it . is it tough, timing?
i hv got to make up my mind, as i am tired of working now and my kid need me too and i need to find money too. all at once. -

Shatec more recognizable, but just to advice, the 5 poly's would definitely be the best.

people often say chefs are like rockers.. it's true ! we sing, we drink, we swear, we create, girls (here in canada at least) dig us, ppl thank us (in canada again), we eat for free and by the end of the night, we come out all sweaty and dirty
if you can accept that then yeah, it's fun! life as a pastry chef might be different in some places. you start your shift way before anyone else does like 7 or 8 in the morning. if you work in a hotel, you bake the breads, cakes, pies & desserts for every kitchen / restaurant in your establishment.
in a restaurant, same thing goes but most of the time u r the only pastry chef working there. so yeah, u got shit load of baking to do in a short time span before lunch service starts.
you said you have a kid which needs your attention now? you might want to consider coming into this line then. you have no time, no life and not much of a pay when you first start off.. starting pay sheme in most hotels in sg will be $985/mth and restaurants start at $1150/mth. think about it because it might not suit u now... -
yeah, u r right, it is tough, even though i love cooking, baking stuff, but that is tough kind of job, and i am used to office job like in at 8am and dot 5pm i leave the office and earning more than $2,000 bring home. and i am thinking i may be crazy. but what to do i really love cooking baking, is there any carrer i can do if i take up that diploma course if i can't be chef what can i be then after completing the course. i love to learn baking cookies, cooking just that,where can i learn in short term. and i wish i could stp working to care of child. i am cannot make up my mind, there is so much things goiong on in my mind.

You will not be able to spend time with your child and bring in a steady income if you take on a full time diploma course.
Suggest you stay on your job. And try to find ways to work more efficiently so that you come home earlier and have more time at home. Or spend quality time with the child since you have so little of it.
If you want specific baking courses, you could sign up courses at the commnity centers, or maybe even Phoon Huat . To start a home-baking business, it is better to focus on a few items that you can do well. You don't need to know the theoretical aspects of cooking that a diploma course covers. -

Being a culinarian doesn't me you have to work in a restaurant. Food critics, Food Nutritionist & R&D chefs are other paths you can take too.
If you just want to do baking, go take a part time course. I think sunrise has them or even some bakery's do have courses like that. U just have to look..
