the biasness of media and weakness of singapore intellectual

newspaper and media has few aims.. education in one of them, another is also profit.
profit requires sensationalise news, or information that attracts human attention and requires lot of emotions
however education and profit making do not go hand in hand. sensationalising news is bias, cause people to have inaccurate percpetions........
therefore, we readers has to be critical reader... otherwise you just be ignorant smart alec kid who go around talking, arguing as if your belief system is right......
to be logical understanding of things has to be learnt and for a long period of time
our education system do teaches maths, english, history and science which are useful. however, our students are not learning te significance of these subjects and learning how to relate what their have learn to life itself. their logic skills ares till very poor in life.
this is detrimental to well being of the intelligence of a person and will affect other aspects of life leading to more unhappiness, violent outbreak occasionally and arguments...
singapore society is mainly churning intellects from university and polytechnic who has specialized skills in various areas.
however, our capacility is underutilized because we learn too little about life and potential is pathetically underused. we are only capable of doing what our career roles requires us to do, to earn a living and spend our salary our material well beings and leisure activities....
anything outside these few things, we have very superficial knowledge cos we seldom learn. even if people go for upgrading lesson... it is usually to do with job learning.....
look here. life is about life... its not only about working and passion for your job till death..... if you thinking about job largely most of your time, then you have miss out a important thing in your life, which is your life.... -
It's a difference between a desire to learn and a need to learn.
I learn because I need to (6 years of compulsory education under the laws), but whether I want to, is another issue. -
dat's the reason why we should be more educated n study engineering as it build up our problem solving, technical, management and analytical thinking skills.
not only dat, we must have highly order learning in every interdiscipline skills as well to make ourselves all-rounders.
but the most important is ur com skills where ur interpersonal, moral values, n EQ counts. -
i dun think engineering is the only way to be intelligent...
other subjects like science which is very broad is also useful
moral values.. debatable issues.. have to read philosophy... super loads of text on moral values...
EQ .. perhaps can learn from people who have good communication skills, self improvment courses or books, or pscyhology -

Best is to combine science/technology with humanities....
better yet is the what I call the school of hard knocks...that's teh best form of education...studying alot will only be a door opener but the rest of you life studying in the workplace is the best -

I wonder why u would single out engineering... its true engineers r very meticulous and analytical, but the engineering way of thinking is overly empirical, often not able to take into account life's ambiguity (not very well at least).
Engineering is fine, but its just not the epitome of an all-rounded education, hence the need for interdisciplinary exposure. -
i guess that's the problem with the education system in singapore in that, it puts a lot of emphasis on academia and meritocracy. while they are not necessarily bad things, if you put all your eggs in one basket, i guess you don't end up being a well rounded individual.
education deserves to be shared with everyone, we all have a right to knowledge, that allows us to think out of our boxes and create our own futures if we so desire.
unfortunately, i think in singapore, our education is only seen as our paper chase, a passport to a job, and then it becomes our lives.
what about our family, friends and communities? shouldn't those things be valued as well? -
