we used to catch rainbow guppy and mini sand crabs in canals.. explore underneath tunnels.. small side canals.. but dun go in during high tide and when the tide is coming in and during rains or if u notice rain is coming..
So far during rain we never went in.. that was years ago..

I stayed in a kampung when I was younger. The longkang was one of our playgrounds. The canal had dry banks. We would run up and down the canal walls. But yeah, we never played there when it rains.
Later in my life (we moved to a HDB flat), I had two friends who drowned while playing along the canal. She fell into the canal and drowned. Her brother tried to rescue her drowned too. Yes, the current is very strong, so don't overestimate your swimming ability. -
i heard that in a canal, the gates to clear excess water which is opened thru PUB can be opened anytime, so whether isit raining or not, there could be large gushes of water anytime thru the canal which was why some kids die down there.
How true isit? -

But of cos have the good sense of getting out when de sky turn dark of when it starts to drizzle... not run and hide in one of the holes at the side hoping that the rain will stop... -
long time ago liao...went with classmate to Ama Keng...got big canal there...the sides quite slippery with algae...my friend slipped into the water...managed to pull him back and he escaped with wet clothes and dirty shoes.
