3 friends, decided to stay overnight at Yellow^86 Island.
They found this very cheap motel.
They were being told by the counter that it's only $30 per night.
So they decided to share, $10 per person, which make $30 ($10 x 3 = $30)
After the night, the counter realised she made a mistake.
It was supposingly only $25, but she charged them $30.
Thinking of returning the $5, she found it very difficult to be divide by 3.
It will never give the whole number when 5 divided by 3, and even if she were to return the cents, it will be $1 and 66.66666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666667- cents.
So she decided to take away $2 from the $5, so it makes $3 and can be divided by 3.
And so she returned $1 to each person.
She took $2, so it makes the rental now $28. ($30 - $2 = $28 )
The 3 friends, now reveiced $1 each, is now only paying $9 per person. ($10 - $1 = $9).
Which means also, they are paying only $27. ($9 x 3 = $27)
The question is, where did the another $1 go? -

$30 - $5( 3 dollar extra from each friend and $2 pocketed) + $2 ( coz they still ended up paying for that ) = $27. which is the answer -

TS, the way you calculate is wrong. Where got people calculate maths like that one..
30-5=25
25+2=27
27+3=30
Simple. -

Instead of finding where the $1 goes, the question is back to how the 3 person is to divide the payment now that the rent is actually $25.
How to divide $25 by 3 so they can pay in whole numbers instead of cents and stuffs?
In this case you can either:
1. Get them to pay $9 each which adds up to $27 and the lady will take the $2 and thus the payment is justified.
2. In the case of the $2 is taken from the $30. The remaining $28 is abit confusing initially. However once you take $3 and return to the 3 guys, the payment of $25 for the rent will be justified.
So... its the assumption of the calculations that is wrong to begin with such that, without proper clarification of how much is to go to who, the $1 will never be made know as to where it went to. -
