nope, half of the time, they will try to speak slower than usual, and they think we can't speak english, usually for my case, and if you don't speak proper english, they might have a hard time, trying to understand what you are saying
and beside, those people who speak with an accent, i will probably LOL@THEIR BACK -
I've never spoken english with an accent, whether singlish accent or ang moh accent.

I speak normally with them. But of course I stop using Mandarin and dialects at that point... since it's most likely they wouldn't understand anyway... plus I'm not good at dialects either.
I don't slang on purpose though. I don't see any purpose in that. In fact, I feel kind of sorry for people who tried to slang whenever they are speaking to Caucasians. It's as if they feel so inadequate about themselves that they have to be Caucasian-like, or to get some level of approval from the Caucasian they were speaking to. -

Nope, I don't. The way I see it, we all have different accents of English. As long as they can understand, I don't have to code switch that much. In fact, it's in Japan that I had to code switch.

I won't say I speak better, but I will speak differently. I can't use certain terms/phrases that is more understood in a Singapore context, and I don't just mean Singlish. Also not all caucasians have the same understanding of English. I have had to converse with caucasians who only know basic English, and are in fact better in other languages than english (that is on top of their mother tongue of course).Originally posted by Marco_Simone:Topic as above.

oh well ..... to keng an accent in singapore, to singaporeans, that is just being silly .... but when you're working or studying at an ang moh country, you're not seeking affirmation or whatever, you're just trying to be understood ....
but I'm seen plenty of instances, and I'll bet my last dollar ... put someone long enough at a place, and he or she will pick up the nuances of speech there .... -
Absolutely not! Just becos they are Ang Moh speaking with an accent doesn't mean they are proficient in their own language. As a matter of fact, under their mask of flamboyant accent, most of them are extremely poor command in grammar as well as vocabulary!
A large part of mastery in the English language depends on your skills in grammar, nothing else.

I think it's rather normal for us to add a little accent in to match theirs. Seen alot of people doing it

No. As it is I can already be understood by most. And it's a mistake to assume every white person you encounter is from Australia, USA or GB.
