So we'll be finished by 2019?Originally posted by LazerLordz:Earliest archaeological and annals' proof of Singapore's existence currently dates back to the 9th Century AD.
Did you know that Singapore/Temasek's prominence in every historical period only lasted 200 years or so?
And that the Johor-Riau Sultanate, including Temasek as the main port of commerce was the main economic power before the British arrival.
Well, if I remember correctly, the decline of the region have always been about new centers of power building up and new kingdoms coming in.Originally posted by Kuali Baba:So we'll be finished by 2019?
I not sure leh, I think it was called Singapure before Raffles came. Temasek is the old name for SG meaning Fishing Port or Village.Originally posted by BusSpeeder:I thought Singapore was firstly discovered by Sir Thomas Raffles in 1819 and that he gave it a name? Singapure or Singapore? But the way I see it, I agree with you that its a Sanskrit word. What name was given by Sir Raffles to Singapore? And then why is there a name, Temasek, being given to Singapore? Is it the same meaning?
Lol, I didnt confirm this fact. Its just that this researcher claimed so. I know of some malays who are racist, they openly tell me that SG belong to the malays and that the chinese and other races are "extras", since Sang Nila Utama founded it.Originally posted by Short Ninja:In fact, some researcher even made the theory that only 4 malay words in the malay language are purely malay, Besi = Iron, padi - rice, nasi - rice, api - fire.
Lucky you didnt mention Belacan,Kelapa,Guitar & Relac or else you sure kena hantam in here.
Sang Nila Utama was Hindu and yes the Malay language has lots of borrowed words but 4 words only is not possible even Swahili which is supposed to be a simple language to learn has a few hundred to start with.
President Nathan is owning SG now.Originally posted by VagueHart:Who cares if the Malays found it first, who's owning the SG now? The past is the past, the present is the present.
i know that lion = singa. if sang nila utama mistook the tiger for a lion, won't that means Singapore won't be called Singapore today?Originally posted by strado:I not sure leh, I think it was called Singapure before Raffles came. Temasek is the old name for SG meaning Fishing Port or Village.
The story of Sang Nila Utama was that he saw a lion remember? Lion = Singa, thus the name is from him. I'm not sure if this is correct, but this is what I think.
Anyway, side info here. My primary school teacher did explain to us before, in the whole world, only two places has got lions. The africa and zoos. There were only tigers in singapore last time, thus they hired people to shoot tigers before and after ww2, around that period.
So what Sang Nila Utama has seen, most probably wasn't a lion, but a tiger. Maybe the man who told him the animal's name made a mistake.
Sounds pretty true to me. Since Discovery Channel only have lions when filming in africa.
The orang lauts were Malays and their direct descendants from Kampong Jagoh (Next to the old Ciros Theater) still live in Telok Blangah Drive and Heights area till this day.Sang Nila Utama was an Indian Prince from a small Kingdom in South Sumatra .......from Jambi I think. With all that transmigration going on for hundreds of years the Malays no longer dominate South East AsiaOriginally posted by strado:Lol, I didnt confirm this fact. I dont think Sang Nila Utama was pure malay though. Which means the orang lauts who lived on sg before raffles came are probably from indonesian and indians descents.

I thought Malaysia is using the tiger as emblem right?Originally posted by BusSpeeder:i know that lion = singa. if sang nila utama mistook the tiger for a lion, won't that means Singapore won't be called Singapore today?
Cos the lion spirit roams the south and the tiger spirit roams the north.Originally posted by BusSpeeder:i know that lion = singa. if sang nila utama mistook the tiger for a lion, won't that means Singapore won't be called Singapore today?
The lion dance isnt from the real lions what. Its from this animal called Nian if I'm not wrong. They call it lion dance because it looks like lion, I think so ar? Cos I know the lions in lion dance are combined attributes of diff animals, like the scales of the dragon on its body etc.Originally posted by banzie:Yea I think there are lions... but in Central asia... india or something... maybe extinct over the years... that's how Utama knows about it... and also how Chinese ahve lion dance and viewed lion as auspious animal when China doesn't have Lions. They got the idea when Zhang Qian during the han dynasty go to the west and build silk road.
What my teacher meant was that he mistook a tiger for a lion, thus calling it Lion City.Originally posted by BusSpeeder:i know that lion = singa. if sang nila utama mistook the tiger for a lion, won't that means Singapore won't be called Singapore today?

I'm 100% sure that the current RI was built on cemetery grounds.Originally posted by Icemoon:Bishan was a big cemetery last time but not sure whether the MRT was built on former cemetery ground.
Bishan is hanyu pinyin for the dialect name of the cemetery - Peck San Theng.

I have to agree with you on this but as for mistaking a tiger for a lion....I think Stevie Wonder also wont make that kind of mistakeOriginally posted by strado:The lion dance isnt from the real lions what. GOT! a real lion roar in a different pitch and the sound can travel incredible distance, the Kallang Roar only happen when Singapore is winningOriginally posted by Icemoon:tiger roar and lion roar got difference or not?
Sang Nila Utama has never seen a lion/tiger before he arrived, thats why he asked the old man what animal is that.Originally posted by Short Ninja:I have to agree with you on this but as for mistaking a tiger for a lion....I think Stevie Wonder also wont make that kind of mistake
