JURORS in a courtroom in New York, sat spellbound as the video played. For nearly half an hour, they watched as teaching assistant Khemwatie Bedessie described events that led her to have sexual intercourse with a 4-year-old boy.
In it, the 38-year-old woman implied that the boy had aroused her. And as she finished, two male jurors covered their faces with their hands, reported the New York Times.
On Thursday, Bedessie's lawyer, MrStephen Turano, made his case to the jurors that the videotaped confession they had seen was a false one brought about by coercion.
The matter came to light in February last year when the 4-year-old complained to his mother about an itch. She asked him if someone had touched his genitals.
He then described contact with 'Miss Anita', as he called Bedessie.
His panic-stricken mother took him to a hospital to be examined.
Ten days later, Bedessie was taken in by the police for questioning.
Detective Ivan Borbon testified that she 'looked me in the eye', appearing 'very nervous', and confessed to molesting the boy.
Soon after, a taped confession was made in which she said the boy had touched her breasts and it caused her to 'react emotionally'.
She described three occasions where she fondled him or had intercourse with him in the day care centre's toilet. After the final episode, she told him not to tell anyone.
Bedessie is expected to testify on Monday before the case goes to the jury. If convicted of rape and the other charges against her, she faces up to 25years in prison.
