Qu yuan was from Chu kingdom, a rival kingdom to Qin..
when Chu collapsed, Qu yuan commited suicide.. -

He says it is not what that goes into your mouth that defiles you. It is what that come out of your mouth that you should watch, as that comes from your heart. So watch what you say rather than what you eat.
As for the dragon boat, so what?
He says to bear in mind that other Christians may be watching and they may misinterpret what you do, and their faith may not be strong enough to understand.
So some Christians may not allow. -
Then I all better not eat the cakes during X-mas or the kway during Hari Raya and also the sweets during Deepavali. Lastly, I should starve during CNY because I free thinker.

let's not interprete things so narrowly that we become a little fundamentalistic (or extremist?) in our practice.
may need to learn to adapt and apply things in our modern context already and not go back to the olden times.
if we know a bit of European & American history, we found out how they came out of the "dark ages" by re-intepreting their customs and religious practices to the extent of starting the christian denominations that we know of today.
can we learn to separate customs observation from religion? ...
