Hello people.... I'm 20 this year, still serving my NS. All the while, i've been harbouring thoughts of furthering my undergrad studies overseas preferrably UK (which is earliest next year, coz i ord this year)
So i have a few questions. Firstly, my interests lies in econs/biz and i'm quite apt in maths and econs. My a's grades are aabc (result for math, econ, chem, phy), b4. What kind of courses should i apply for, if i want to land myself on to the route of becoming an investment banker or accountant? Yup, what courses and instituitions will be suitable for me given my grades? I've currently found one that caught my interest, Bsc in Acc & Finance at LSE - standard acceptance grade is AAB. But typical competition is 2k+ for 100+ places so i think it's quite competitive.
Secondly, i know my grades arent fantastic so i dont think i can clinch any scholarships. Understand it requires about 300k sgd for 3 years studies in london, so is there any study loans i can obtain? Is it recommended if i study and work part time to lessen financial load?
Thirdly, i'm taking my SAT and JLPT for interests sake and perhaps to clinch a local uni scholarship if i don't get overseas afterall. Will these academic results aid me in my UCAS application?
Lastly, anyone knows the application deadline for 2008? I've ploughed through the site but to no avail.
Thanks for any help rendered!
An undergrad-to-be hoping to venture into foreign lands.

CPA?how to get it after obtaining an accounting degree?what are the requirements?what are the advantages of having it?more job position?what the differences between someone who have a CPA and one without it,u still can apply as an accounting executive without a CPA right?Originally posted by fymk:If I were you, I learn from my mistakes and move on. If you are really interested in that destination - just do accountancy and get CPA or Chartered accountants as a fallback - always good to have a skill. Then intern for a bank in Singapore and see how it goes- extra work never mind as long as you learn the tricks of the trade. Another good degree to have is a operations research and statistics degree - they play on probability which impacts majorly on investments on top of the economics.
I myself, have nursing as the fall back if my dream does not work out. I am already in what I see as a dream job and I am not in nursing anymore.
There are many ways to get to things you want - just whether you want to do it or not.
mind sharing what dream job you're in now.Originally posted by fymk:If I were you, I learn from my mistakes and move on. In my life, I do that often - bu zhen qi then learn the hard way and move on.

LSE is even harder. The world wants to study in LSE.Originally posted by thousandisland:yah bu zhen qi has been what i've been commiting so far. lol in smu, it's even harder to get 1st class. been told there's alot of rj muggers there. faints, competition wise, it could be the most intense of all 3.
I am working with data sets and mathematical/statistical modelling of diseases in Australia on a national level. That was what I wanted to do. And I started writing papers to publish. Had co-authorship from 2 papers - so now need primary authorship of one major paper and working towards it .Originally posted by thousandisland:mind sharing what dream job you're in now.
CPA or Chartered Accountants status- you can move around globally. Without either one of those, then you have to grow locally. It is about mobility in jobs now.Originally posted by KenPlus:CPA?how to get it after obtaining an accounting degree?what are the requirements?what are the advantages of having it?more job position?what the differences between someone who have a CPA and one without it,u still can apply as an accounting executive without a CPA right?

I would not worry about RJCers or whatever in SMU. If they were that good, they would have got into NUS or NTU or gain a presidential scholarship.Originally posted by thousandisland:oic that's cool. all the wish in what you're doing!
Two of them are work related publications. My main paper is from my old master thesis and work place thinks it is usable to analyse the new data they have now.Originally posted by Xcert:so academic....Masters or phd thesis?![]()

And come to think of it - so funny I hated maths when I was young. I actually manage to struggle past into masters level type of statistics without A maths or a JC education - nearly flunk it because I went for the accelerated course somemore. Then BAM...suddenly discovered I got an aptitude for it. So now furthering into another postgrad for mathematical statistics.
Not academic . It is all hardwork.
you seem to have a slant towards smu vis-a-vis nus and ntu. act i think it's comparable in many sense. your friend from one top jc and prize winner in poly? from poly jump to jc? very rare.Originally posted by fymk:I would not worry about RJCers or whatever in SMU. SMU is a fairly new university - go in with a fresh start.
Personally I competed against a friend in an overseas university - my friend couldn't get into the top 2% cohort while I did. I went in and gave it my all and university gave me a scholarship to offset my international school fees. Know what? My friend was from one of the top JCs ( I think it was VJC or Temasek) and was prize winner in all the subjects in poly , was given a scholarship in Singapore to go over but couldn't get into 2%.
Whoa.....10k words I already have problems. 50-70k words? Hello ...cannot lah. Maybe I will end up with a PhD - permanent head damage.Originally posted by Xcert:U sound like U will eventually do a phd and end up in a uni.![]()
