the man is holding a scroll and i think a 'pen' (ie. ancient type of 'pen' - write with ink one)
the woman is holding a stylus (that means the woman only writes on temporary medium/media)

because writings with ink on a pyparus is permanent
whereas the woman is holding a stylus and a template probably made of wax
meaning her writings are temporary - not to be taken seriously
(you know, like our kids' writings on those boards that can be erased by sliding something across)
it shows the patriachal, androcentric world of ancient days
(it's a roman painting - dunno which century) -
