The last few times there was a "mini crash" (since Jan last year when the market started moving up, it promptly go back up to the price it crash down from and then move higher.
If it crashes down after going back up to the price it came down from... that is a very ominous sign... and also most of the big market crashes in history happens in the last quarter of the year.
It starts to come down in August and people refuse to believe it until Sept/Oct when they all panic and try to get out all at the same time. -
What are good stocks to buy for dividend returns? I hear sometimes the dividends are better than the pathetic interest on the "best" interest rates. Are dividends taxable? Btw, which companies have not exercised some tax return thingy (I forgot which bylaw) so the "refund" will be distributed amongst the shareholders like the one Robinsons did last year.

Stocks which consistently pay dividends are Singtel (this time 16 cts per share), SMRT (5.75 cts per share) & others like Singpost - the rest cannot remember. As long as the dividend payouts are better than the miserable FD rate (which is less than 1% unless you have a $$million), that is good enough. That is to say, if you have $10k, and you place as FD in a bank for ONE solid year (365 days) you get no more than $100. But if you use $10k to buy SingTel at today's closing, you can get about 3,000 shares. At 16 cents dividend per share, you get $480 in one month's time. That is 4.8% per month. Work that out for a year! -

Some people prefer to go for "high growth" stocks instead of dividends paying stocks.
Whatever it is, the stock market is tikam tikam (guesses) and high growth stocks can become dividend stocks and dividend stocks can become worthless paper.
So as long as you are not gambling and is using money you can afford to lose (save up the money you intend for investing) pick dividend stocks, high growth stocks or whatever, anything, is OK.
If you are investing money meant for retirement, then choose the bluest of the blue chips, even then there are no guarantees. -
Reading the views expressed thru all the pages, I think "old uncle" (as he calls himself) generally has some good pointers on the investing strategy of the stock market. -
Issue is not just whether the advice is good or not but whether people follows the advice and even more alarming... whether people can follow the advice even if the want to...

I think alot of people had become millionaires overnite cos of the booming stock and property market this last two years. Can you imagine, Lamboghini was zero three years ago and now there are 30 registered cars on the road. I still remember the difficult 80s and 1997, I hope that there will not be a new batch of people greedy to be rich instantly and get burnt very badly later.
