  its cuz they r old n no one wanna employ them, collecting to recycle willl give them a meagre sum of money to support themselves or their parents/children

  they simply collect the metals that we stupidly throw in the dustbin and sell it away for companies to recycle.
  
  i dunno if recycling for their environment was part of their cause but otherwise as long as they dun take it to throw at our reservoirs and fields that should be fine lah

  They are better in demonstrating "save the earth" concept

  your figures sound a little high. scrap aluminum is bought and sold by weight. $1 per pound sounds more likely....and it takes approx. 32 12oz. aluminum cans to = a pound
  
  give the elderly the respect they deserve...they're helping keep Singapore clean and they may truly need that little bit of income.

  really saddening...that day was going to get myself lunch then saw an old man prying open the recycle bin with his walking stick to get the drink can so can sell... thought he might take some time so I buy another pack of char kway teow... come back he gone liao... haix to earn those few bucks he need to waste so much effort.
