Ah wrong again, I used to learn classical guitar and you only need your nails a little longer than usual not until the white part is 1cm long like the TS described. You use most of your fingertips to pluck, the nails are there to protect your fingers when you strum. I'm sure if you grew your nails to the length the TS described you'd break them whilst playing.
