The founders of this 2 company were actually brothers.
Company split
Both brothers joined the Nazi party, but Rudi as a World War One veteran was slightly closer to the party. During the war, a growing rift between the pair reached breaking point, after an Allied bomb attack in 1943 when Adi and his wife climbed into a bomb shelter that Rudolf and his family were already in: "The dirty bastards are back again," Adi said, apparently referring to the Allied war planes, but Rudolf was convinced his brother meant him and his family. After Rudolf was later picked up by American soldiers and accused of being a member of the Waffen SS, he was convinced that his brother had turned him in.
In 1948, the brothers split their business, when Rudi left the high hill for the other side of the Aurach river: Adolf called his firm Adidas after his nick name; Rudolf called his new firm Ruda after Rudolph Dassler.
Rudolf's company changed its name to PUMA Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler in 1948, and became a public company in 1986, listed on the Börse München and Frankfurt Stock Exchange. -

adidas and Puma did indeed split as they had been conflicting personalities for quite awhile.
If you do want to know, adidas has been the major player in the world of sports. Adolf Dassler, the founder of adidas, was the man credited with helping Germany win their first world cup in The Miracle of Bern. he is also the man responsible for the appointment of the current Fifa president, Sepp Blatter.
adidas became the powerhouse they are today because of one man, Adlof Dassler's son, Horst Dassler. Under Horst, adidas was split internally for awhile, with the German side being under the control of his parents and adidas international being aggresively expanded by him. At one time, even Le Coq Sportif was under adidas.
As for Nike, they did enter the market because of Asics/ Tiger Onitsuka. They started the company under the name Blue Ribbon Sports in Oregon. Blue Ribbon Sports simply imported Asics/ Tiger Onitsuka and were the sole distributors in America. The founder of Nike then "stole" the technology and created some shoes of his own and registered the name of the company as Nike.
It's interesting to note that while there are many rumors regarding the vast sums of money paid to the designers of the iconic Nike swish tick, the reality is that a design student was paid US$25 to design it.
Also, in the 80s to 90s, adidas, though valuable as a brand, was slowly fading due to weak leadership after the deaths of both Adolf and Horst Dassler. It was the two men who helped market Nike to become the powerhouse they are today that also helped to revive the fortunes of adidas.
They are the men responsible for the two different logos of adidas, namely the three stripes of increasing heights, as seen on their football boots for example, and the trefoil, or the "old school" adidas logo, which has now been used to brand their "traditional" designs. -
It's interesting to note that while both companies started with the etho of providing quality runner oriented shoes, adidas were the pioneers of celebrity endorsement deals while New Balance are firm believers of the saying that "the quality of the product sells itself."Originally posted by shandower:

i went to boarders to read the 8 days, hmm, puma mainly on fashion stuff, while adi has technology - they have orginals, performance and style.
sports brand to much le go malaysia and see buy and throw away(bata) selling "power" shoe, the total 90 boot(for soccer) become power 90 boot. lol
kronos, the upside tick oso for sale, wtf. adidas boot, become 4 or 2 stripe. wtf.

le coq was once under adidas. thats how the swimming brand Arena came about, because adi head management was unwilling to have a swimwear line but their son, Horst, wanted one.
Umbro actually stands for Humphrey Brothers and used to sell only kits(jersey and shorts), and helped to market adi boots. It was only when adi started to sell kits that umbro and adi split their biz connections. -
