maybe they didn't think things through before acting. maybe they thought if they cut out illegal downloads, anime fans will have no choice but to turn to them to feed their addiction.Originally posted by brokenluv:in the light of all this, what is odex's or rather, stephin sing real intention? many of anime lovers claim them to be profiteering, while odex claim that they want to cut down illegal downloading. However, by the looks of things, i do feel that their actions can also be revenged-motivated. why? thats because their sales have decreased by 60% over the years, even if they win this lawsuit against pacnet and takes more action against downloaders, after which there will be less downloaders, more anime fans will only switch to online streaming, boycott products or search for other methods already. Thus i dont see why odex have the motivation/be a hero and help police curb illegal downloading, other then seeking to cover up losses suffered over these few years and to take a wicked revenge against downloaders.

I hope the courts can use this as evidence:
Look at the synopsis of this dvd odex is selling -
http://www.odex.com.sg/product.php?product=2
I just randomly clicked on a product on their website..
"Synopsis:
The entrance of more people in the following series heightens the responsibilities of these girls, even Kyohei ex schoolmate have special abilities. The rise of the new Governor had plans to renew Tokyo in tremendous speed, using military forces to put away criminal organizations. But on the other hand, its experimenting on the people of Tokyo. Organization ZERO, the background of the Government carry out experiments such as creation of human weapons, such as the Angels."
What kind of standard is this? Their subtitles are the same!!
Just get an english teacher to testify in court that their products are RUBBISH! Their subtitling is INCOMPREHENSIBLE!
There's even a picture on wikipedia to prove it!
yep, and in addition, want to be a hero? why dont they make their product better 1st, especially the subbing, and then come out and say : '' hey! our anime quality isnt tt bad, why arent ppl buying them? " this way, even tho doesnt make them less of a villain cux they r waging war against anime fans, it reflects better on their company's reputation in the industry. But now its their product also suck still come out n sue ppl, it just doesnt seem that they are heroic, it just reflects on their intention of profiteering.Originally posted by dumbdumb!:maybe they didn't think things through before acting. maybe they thought if they cut out illegal downloads, anime fans will have no choice but to turn to them to feed their addiction.
but unfortunately, they forgot that if the consumers are pissed, we can always boycott them.
they think they're like drug lords, go kill rival competitors, they will dominate the market. drug addicts can always go the extreme and go cold turkey.
it can work the same with with anime
You can say that fansubbing affects their revenue directly. And it is definitely in their own interest to try to prevent that. If people stop downloading fansubs in SG, they MAY end up buying ODEX products instead. So it is quite clear that if downloading stops, they will start to make more money.Originally posted by brokenluv:in the light of all this, what is odex's or rather, stephin sing real intention? many of anime lovers claim them to be profiteering, while odex claim that they want to cut down illegal downloading. Most likely. But whether they will file the case separately is another issue.Originally posted by Shotgun:Btw, if the Japanese copyright owners are gonna come down here to seek compensation, it means they will be heard in court right?
Any one gonna fansub the hearing?
Heh, a lot of people do this and they are very successful. Please look at our US friends as examples.Originally posted by brokenluv:in the light of all this, what is odex's or rather, stephin sing real intention? many of anime lovers claim them to be profiteering, while odex claim that they want to cut down illegal downloading. Only Government can have the sha yi jing bai effect on Singaporeans. ODEX doesn't. Look at the way they are being challenged. Whatever they write, say, they are whacked up down left right.Originally posted by Shotgun:You can say that fansubbing affects their revenue directly. In the US, license holders would issue a Cease and Desist to fansubbers. But I don't remember any of them issuing a "Cease n Desist" to downloaders.
Odex's case in a way very important as its the first time a license holder (supposedly) is taking action against downloaders instead of fansubbers. And instead of issuing a cease n desist, Odex implies that such warnings would not have had effect and demanded a monetary/pecuniary compensation from a downloader.
Perhaps they are exercising the feared, "Sha1 yi1, jing2 bai3" strategy which Kiasee Singaporeans would be more afraid of. They kill 1, and silence a hundred. To demand monetary compensation from a few, to set a precedence such that others would guai guai, stop downloading, thereby killing the demand for fansubs.
Honestly, I doubt they will succeed in stopping the download of anime in Singapore. Firstly, they offer an alternative that is sub-standard. Secondly, they do not hold licenses to ALL the anime there is. Finally, their site needs to explicitly lists what licenses they are holding here in Singapore.

Like the chinese saying, '' yue tu yue hei'', no point doing anything to salvage anything liao, ODEX name has already been blacklisted by SG anime fans liaoOriginally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Only Government can have the sha yi jing bai effect on Singaporeans. It's very stupid how they blame censorship when the sentence "That's guy looks so cool" is not even grammatically correct.Originally posted by elindra:In today's TNP, Odex pushed the blame of bad subtitling to MDA

Extortion (Penal Code, Cap 224, Sec 383)
Whoever intentionally puts any person in fear of any injury* to that person or to any other, and thereby dishonestly induces the person so put in fear to deliver to any person any property or valuable security, or anything signed or sealed which may be converted into a valuable security, commits “extortion”.
Illustrations
(a) ODEX threatens to publish a defamatory libel concerning DOWNLOADER, unless DOWNLOADER gives him (ODEX) money. He thus induces DOWNLOADER to give him money. ODEX has committed "extortion".
Simpler terms: Since Odex has no rights is sueing people, Odex is now unlawfully threatening people for money.
*injury = injury to mind, body, reputation or property
And Extortion is a seizable offence i.e. can be arrested without a warrant
