12 really but in physics, and america, 9. the original idea was it went up in the previous increment, ie a thousand thousands = a million, a million millions = a billion. it's now 9 because physics follows every increment of the power 3 - ^3 = kila, ^6 = mega, ^9 = giga etc etc it just makes sense for it to follow it. googol is 1^100, so 100 zeros.
