I think some company is not 12 hours shift. It is a duty to work on weekends and the working hours is the normal working hours plus of some OT.Originally posted by Zelphon:Well, I have been in the industry for abt a year already.
Semiconductor industry is a tough industry and once u are in...U can kiss all ur free time gd bye..
As the fab runs 24/7, everytime something crops up... almost everyone will get called up especially if u are a senior engineer and the problem occurs in ur process...
There are many different kind of positions so depending on wat post u hold...the responsibilities differs..
Those fresh into the industry usually will be working rotating 12-hr shifts and once u are senior enough... U will revert back to normal 8-hr shift...
As the industry is tough... Many people left the industry completely after a few years... tat is why EDB is offering all Final Year Graduates in NUS and NTU, specialising in MICROELECTRONICS, a monthly scholarship of up to 1 K a mth, so as to entice graduates to join..
Poly grads usually become engr asst while uni grads usually will become Equipment or Process Engr... Those with Microelectronics specialisation or with semicon background will usually become either Process Intergration, Device or Yield Enhancement engr... Bascially those with semicon background have more job options...
Paywise, relative to all engineering pay, it is slightly higher but if u compare to the financial fields, the financial fields pays way better...
OT pay will usually be given and one can stand to earn up to 6K a mth taking into consideration the OT hrs and the shift allowance... That is also dependent on which fabs u are in....
Currently these are the main fabs in Spore,
1) SSMC
2) UMC
3) Chartered
4) TECH
5) STMicroelectronics
6) Hitachi Semicon
7) Qimonda (coming up)Intel-Micron Flash (coming up)
9) Soitec (Coming up)
10) Siltronic
11) Samsung Siltronic (Coming up)
Ideally, u can join the semicon equipment vendors as Field Service / Applications engr... Paywise is slightly higher but more stressful and hectic...
In short, Semicon industry is similar to the financial sector as everyone is hopping from 1 fab to another so as to get higher pay... and it is pretty small... Long termwise, it is a stable industry at least for the next 10 years till all fabs shift their manufacturing to lower cost China...
If u are solely just interesting in making money.... Join Keppel Shipyard lah as they pay way better dur to their 10 mth bonus a year...![]()

Why do you think all the fabs will shift to China?Originally posted by Zelphon:In short, Semicon industry is similar to the financial sector as everyone is hopping from 1 fab to another so as to get higher pay... and it is pretty small... Business is all about COST...Originally posted by The return:Why do you think all the fabs will shift to China?
Comparing Keppel Shipyard and semicond, which one more siong? I heard keppel one also quite siong leh.
Equipment Engineers make the sure equipment is running smoothly lah... They will try to troubleshoot simple equipment failures... Unless the tool is covered by Service Contract, Equipment Engrs will have to learn and fix the tool and bring it up for production...Originally posted by The return:I think some company is not 12 hours shift. I understand process and equipment engineer have to work hand in hand. I have some understanding of process engineer in this thread. What about equipment engineer? Can anyone tell me more about the job nature?
Can lah...Originally posted by knightlll:No engineering background , how to enter ?
Zephron is right , the semicon industry is indeed a stressful industryOriginally posted by Zelphon:Well, I have been in the industry for abt a year already.

Then what would happen to those working in semiconductor? They will have a hard time finding a same pay job and have to start all over again ?Originally posted by Zelphon:Business is all about COST...
Most semicon fabs started in USA, Europe, Japan, etc...
They they shifted to lower cost places like Spore and Taiwan...
Who can compete with COST with China and India now ???
Already we are seeing Hynix and Intel building 300mm fabs in China...
Manufacturing will eventually go to China... The question is WHEN??
Yes....Keppel is pretty siong as the people are required to work from MON to SAT.... But OT pay is given and they give really huge BONUS !!!....
Semicon is siong due to the crappy work hours and bascially on tsandby 24/7...Both are SIONG each in their own ways..
then those factories will work harder to produce chips for the war machines.Originally posted by The return:I'm thinking... what if China goes to war?
Why you still prefer shift work in semicon? If so, why you quit in the first place? :$Originally posted by bigdeal:just quit semicon industry not long ago. was in 2 dif semicon factory.
1)no free time- it depends on which company u go to. TECH for eg, yes, no free time at all. my fren diploma had a gross of 60k last yr. for mine, free time alot, ot also depends.
2)easy life- also depends ur job designation. i was in testing department. and hell ya, it was not easy life. operators call u for 1 simple question with regards to the machine. if "click" with them, less problems of coz
3)process enginners in my 1st company were very free.
i have left this industry abt 3 mths, back to 8-5 mon-fri job.
honestly i still prefer shift work in a semicon
what are your qualifications?Originally posted by The return:Hi all,
What would like to find out more about life in semiconductor industry?
I would be applying for the position of process engineer in a semiconductor industry. Could you tell me more about this job nature?
Degree holder. What's up?Originally posted by the.owl:what are your qualifications?
Which fab is paying the highest for fresh grad?Originally posted by Zelphon:Well, I have been in the industry for abt a year already.
