  The airfare is already close to or exceeding 1200 bucks and I don't even want to mention about the tax. 5K for one person is definitely enough.

  If you go south island, set aside 1K for petrol. And one week see also cannot see anything, coz everywhere is so far apart, 70% of the time you spend stepping on the accelerator.

  I remembered this chinese restaurant that charged me 5 bucks for that little plate of sliced chili, and 20 bucks for that plate of fried rice.

  Actually I went twice, once was only south island, and the other both. Spent at least 2 weeks each time. Planned to go a third time, but didn't realise it. While it Oz, was invited to go with some pals. But good thing I didn't go, they crashed the rental car. Dunno what to say, but they damn lucky to come back alive.

  I only transited thru auckland, got out of auckland on the same day. My main motive of reaching north island is to head down south.

  2 weeks wasn't even enough, the 2nd time I went, spent 3 weeks there, coz 1 week and the half is spent on the road.

  If ur backpacking,3k can last u for close to a mnth[exclude air tix]if u do know how to spend wisely.

  Yes, must plan alot, and decide which stretch of road you want to complete which day what time. Coz come sunset, you'll know how black a blackhole can be. If you think 10000K type HID headlights are going to show you the way, they're not.
  
  You need to wake up early early in the morning when its fricking cold, and drive long straight roads that make you think they never end, so you can make it to your next waypoint in time, or you'll never have time to enjoy where you plan to stay.
