I'm talking about encounters with parang-wielding idiots. I was thinking of carrying a dummy wallet; any other ideas?

Take up knife defence class.
The best way to fight someone armed with a sharp weapon is to either use a long blunt weapon or use another sharp weapon.
In knife to knife combat, keep your armed hand back and use your other hand as a shield. Go for cuts, not stabs. Always look out for opportunity to disarm opponent, e.g. slashing his armed hand or slapping it out of his hand. Lastly, never be afraid to use your defensive arm to protect yourself. It will end in a bloody mess, but if you stick to some of the tips i've suggested, chances are you will live.
Anyway, this is just a short summary on stance and techniques. You will need real classes if you want to engage in knife to knife combat. -

my mother's bf kena before.
He at malaysia then one malaysian chinese told him he needed some money to pay for his mother hospital bills. He gave him 2 dollars RM and the guy took out a needle and pointed it at him saying its not enough and he needs more etc etc with a pitiful face. My mother bf took out some coins and gave him he still say not enough and turned a little aggressive. Then my mother's bf suddenly pushed him a small distance away and kicked him in the stomach and shout at the guy "still dont want go do huh" Then that guy run away liao -

Really dependant on the situation.
But the rule of the thumb for me is that if his intention is just to rob - then I'd surrender my stuff to him - I mean no point taking a risk getting myself harmed over money and material stuff.
If his intention is not just to rob but to harm me too, then he's in for some bloody fun.
I'll fucking decapitate with the very knife he points at me, and I'll baptize myself with his blood... Chee bye
